Of the 10 games contested on Tuesday:

* Eight were tied or within one goal during the third period (COL-NJD, CBJ-MTL, PHI-OTT, BUF-DET, ARI-NSH, MIN-CHI, DAL-CGY and VAN-LAK).
* Four saw a team overcome a third-period deficit to win (BUF-DET, ARI-NSH, DAL-CGY and VAN-LAK). That included a three-goal comeback victory by the Flames.
* Three extended into overtime (BUF-DET, DAL-CGY and VAN-LAK).

DID YOU KNOW?

There have been 136 comeback wins through the opening 368 games of the 2015-16 season (37.0%). That includes 55 third-period comeback victories, including three by three goals (also MIN at COL on Oct. 8 and DAL at MIN on Nov. 28).

FLAMES BURN STARS WITH THIRD-PERIOD COMEBACK . . .

The Flames scored three unanswered goals in the third period and converted all three of their shootout attempts to overcome a 3-0 deficit, earn their fifth consecutive win at Scotiabank Saddledome and halt the Stars’ road winning streak at six games.

* Via Elias, the Flames overcame a three-goal, third-period deficit to win for the first time since March 26, 2011 at EDM (5-4 SO W).
* The Stars played their second consecutive game that featured a three-goal comeback win after 40 minutes. On Saturday, they rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the third period to defeat the Wild, 4-3.
* Dougie Hamilton potted the tying goal with 2:28 remaining on Tuesday, while Johnny Gaudreau scored in both the third period and shootout. Sean Monahan added a pair of assists in regulation and also notched the clinching goal in the tiebreaker.

. . . NEVER SAY NEVER

Three other teams also posted comeback wins on Tuesday, all by overcoming third-period deficits:

* Justin Abdelkader (2-1—3) scored the tying goal with 6:29 remaining in regulation and Brad Richards potted the lone goal in the shootout to help the Red Wings extend their point streak to eight games (5-0-3), including seven contests that have gone past regulation. The Red Wings also improved to 17-1-2 in their last 20 meetings with the Sabres dating to Feb. 13, 2003 (BUF: 3-14-3).
* Drew Doughty notched the tying goal at 6:54 of the third period and Anze Kopitar scored at 2:02 of overtime to lift the Kings to a 3-0-1 record in their past four games overall as well as their fourth consecutive victory at STAPLES Center. Kopitar picked up his sixth career overtime goal (all w/ LAK) to surpass Ziggy Palffy and Luc Robitaille for the most such goals in franchise history.
* Down 2-1 after 40 minutes, the Predators scored four unanswered goals – including a pair by Filip Forsberg (2-1—3) – to improve to 8-2-2 this season at Bridgestone Arena. Forsberg matched a career high for points in one game, last achieved March 28 at WSH (1-2—3), while Shea Weber posted his sixth career three-assist game and first since Nov. 18, 2014 at TOR.

PACIORETTY (AGAIN) LIFTS CANADIENS OVER BLUE JACKETS

Max Pacioretty snapped a 1-1 tie with 2:09 remaining in regulation to help the Canadiens extend their point streak to six contests (5-0-1).

* At 19-4-3 (41 points), the Canadiens moved two points ahead of the Stars (19-5-1, 39 points) – who lost in a shootout – for first place in the NHL standings. Elias says that Montreal’s 41 points are its most through the first 26 games of a season since 1976-77 (also 19-4-3).
* Pacioretty extended his point streak to five games (3-3—6) and paces the team with 13-12—25 overall this season, including three game-winning goals.
* Pacioretty, who leads the NHL with 24 game-winning goals since 2013-14, also registered the decisive tally in Montreal’s prior three games vs. CBJ: Jan. 14, Feb. 21 and Feb. 26.

LONG TIME COMING

A pair of teams – the Penguins and Panthers – snapped lengthy losing streaks against their respective opponents on Tuesday:

* Evgeni Malkin recorded 1-2—3 to lead the Penguins to their first win over the Sharks in San Jose since Oct. 22, 1997, halting a 12-game drought (0-9-3). Malkin has picked up points in six of his last seven outings (8-5—13), including four multi-point performances, and paces the team with 12-13—25 overall this season (24 GP).
* Derek MacKenzie scored twice to power the Panthers to their first victory over the Blues since Oct. 31, 2009, ending a six-game skid in the head-to-head series (0-5-1). MacKenzie notched his second career multi-goal performance (413 GP) and first since March 12, 2011 at CAR (2-0—2 w/ CBJ).

AROUND THE RINKS

* Ryan Suter registered the tiebreaking goal with 7:56 remaining in regulation to lift the Wild over the Blackhawks in their final meeting before the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series on Sunday, Feb. 21, at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
* Wayne Simmonds (1-1—2) collected the game-winning goal for the second straight contest to propel the Flyers to their third consecutive victory. Simmonds, who notched 2-1—3 on Saturday at NYR, posted a career-high six game-winning goals last season.
* Matt Duchene and Tyson Barrie scored 4:05 apart in the second period to lead the Avalanche to their third victory in their last five outings. Duchene, who paced all players with 11 goals in November (14 GP), picked up his 13th of the season.

20 AND COUNTING

Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane scored the team’s lone goal to stretch his point streak to a career-high 20 games (12-20—32), extending his record for the longest such run by a U.S.-born player in NHL history.
* Per Elias, Kane’s point streak is the second-longest by any player in Blackhawks history, one game shy of the franchise record set by Bobby Hull from Dec. 5, 1971 – Jan. 23, 1972 (23-12—35 in 21 GP).
* Elias adds that Kane is the fourth player to register a point streak of 20 or more games since the 1997-98 season:

Point Streaks of 20+ Games, Since 1997-98
25 – Sidney Crosby, PIT: Nov. 5 – Dec. 28, 2010 (26-24—50)

Liberals top in accessible voters but realize a decline in Nanos tracking (ending November 27, 2015)

b5ad68c8-9ced-4798-b6a2-6a4139d994a4

The Nanos Party Power Index

  • Nanos Party Power Index – The Index, which is a compilation of a series of questions on vote preferences and impressions of the federal party leaders still has the Liberals with a strong score, although it has declined.  The Liberals scored 66.7 out of a possible 100 points followed by the NDP who scored 47.7 points, the Conservatives with 45.1 points, the Greens with 33.9 points and the BQ with 26.7 points (QC only).
  • Accessible Voters – Although still registering the largest pool of accessible voters, the Liberals registered a one week three point drop with 63.1% of Canadians saying they would consider voting Liberal compared to 41.5% who would consider voting Conservative, 40.9% who would consider voting NDP and 29.7% who would consider voting Green.

The team at Nanos in conjunction with Klipfolio have launched our new live political data portal where you run the numbers you want and can explore the trends and data you need.  This is part of our campaign, not only to provide the most reliable data to Canadians but to let them use it as they wish. We were the first to do nightly tracking and now we are the first research organization to post live public opinion data for Canadians. Here’s the link to check it out

To view the detailed tracking visit our website.

Methodology

The views of 1,000 respondents are compiled into a party power brand index for each party that goes from 0 to 100, where 0 means that the party has no brand power and 100 means it has maximum brand power. A score above 50 is an indication of brand power for the party and its leader at this time.

The important factors in this weekly tracking include the direction of the brand strength or weakness and also the brand power of one federal party relative to another.

The data is based on random telephone interviews with 1,000 Canadians, using a four week rolling average of 250 respondents each week, 18 years of age and over. The random sample of 1,000 respondents may be weighted by age and gender using the latest census information for Canada, and the sample is geographically stratified to be representative of Canada.

The interviews are compiled into a four week rolling average of 1,000 interviews where each week, the oldest group of 250 interviews is dropped and a new group of 250 interviews is added. The current wave of tracking is based on a four-week rolling average of 1,000 Canadians (250 per week) ending November 27th.

A random telephone survey of 1,000 Canadians is accurate 3.1 percentage points, plus or minus, 19 times out of 20.

All references or use of this data must cite “Nanos Party Power Index” as the source.

Vancouver Giveaway Leads To 2-1 Loss To Kings In Overtime

CANUCKS BANTER     By Andrew Chernoff    December 1, 2015

CANUCKS IN DISSARY AS LOSING GAMES HAS NO END IN SIGHT

The Los Angeles Kings (15-8-1) entered the game tonight on a 3-game winning streak at home, playing game two of a four game home stand. Kings last game was against the Chicago Blackhawks on November 28. The overcame a two-goal deficit to win the game 3-2 in overtime.

The Vancouver Canucks (9-9-8) entered the game having lost 10 of their last 13 games, playing the last game of a four game road trip. The Canucks last game was against the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night, losing 4-0 to their division rivals.

Vancouver has lost 11 of their last 14 games.

OPENING PERIOD

The Canucks took a few minutes getting their legs, and their coach Willie Desjardins got a scare early when Vancouver gave up the puck, and Tyler Toffoli came in on Jacob Markstrom on a breakaway but Markstrom held his ground and turned away the scoring opportunity.

Vancouver settled down, and at 6:55 received a man advantage opportunity when Milan Lucic high sticked Alex Edler and the Canucks went on their first power play of the game. It didn’t long for Vancouver to make the Kings pay, as Daniel Sedin (12) on a slapshot scored on Jonathan Quick, assisted by Henrik Sedin (16) and Yannick Weber (4), at 7:39, and the Canucks were up 1-0. That would be the score at the end of the 1rst period.

Markstrom was outstanding in the period with timely saves. The Kings out shot Vancouver 12-6 in the opening period. Canucks were 1-2 on the power play. Kings 0-1 on their power play. Vancouver out hit the Kings, 16-12 but were pathetic on face-offs, winning only 5 of 20. Henrik Sedin was 0 for 8 on face-offs while Bo Horvat was barely better, at 2 for 7.

Alex Burrows took a bad retaliation penalty at the 20 minute mark of the first period for slashing Brayden McNabb, taking the Canucks off of a power play opportunity that Vancouver was on when Marian Gaborik took a penalty at 19:46 for holding Dan Hamhuis.

SECOND PERIOD

The teams started the middle period 4 on 4 for 1:46 thanks to the Burrows penalty at the end of the 1rst period that prematurely ended a Canuck power play.

The second period had no goals. Canucks were 0-2 on the power play. Kings, 0-2 on the power play.

Kings out shot Vancouver 10-9. Vancouver out hit the Kings, 13-7 and were better on face-offs this period, winning 10 of 20. Henrik Sedin was 3 for 8 on face-offs; Bo Horvat, 3 for 3.

Markstrom was outstanding in the period again, stopping at least half a dozen quality scoring chances.

THIRD PERIOD

The Canucks came into the final period with a record of 7-1-4  when leading after two periods.

Drew Doughty tied the game at 1-1, when he scored a power play goal at 6:54, assisted by Marian Gaborik (3) and Nick Shore (3). It was his 2nd goal against Vancouver in 30 career game.

And that is the way the 3rd period would end.

The Kings out shot Vancouver 15-1 in the final period, completely dominating Vancouver, with Jacob Markstrom outstanding in the Canuck net.

Los Angeles was 1-2 on the power play.

OVERTIME

The Kings carried a power play into overtime that started late in the 3rd period, which the Canucks successfully killed.

With Markstrom at 39 shots faced in the game, Alex Edler gave away the puck, and Jeff Carter took the puck, passing it off to Anze Kopitar, who made not mistake, burying the puck past Markstrom, giving the Kings a 2-1 victory at 2:02 of overtime.

The loss was Vancouver’s 8th loss in 9 games that have gone beyond 60 minutes.

CANUCKS JOTTINGS

  • Chris Higgins, Chris Tanev and Jake Virtanen did not play as they are nursing day to day injuries. Brandon Sutter and Ben Hutton still not fit to play.
