NHL MORNING SKATE – NOV. 24, 2015

Welcome to the “NHL Morning Skate,” a daily collection of the latest news and notes from around the League.

RED WINGS UNVEIL STADIUM SERIES JERSEYS

The Red Wings unveiled their jerseys for the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, which they will play in on Feb. 27 at Coors Field in Denver against the Avalanche.

The coloration of the uniform is primarily red with simplified white accents, creating a bold, striking stadium-scale visual while staying true to the color identity of the franchise. The crest features a redesigned “D” logo, updated in its style to connect more with the iconic modern-day Winged Wheel logo.

The single white diagonal stripe across the chest celebrates the iconic stripe of this storied Original Six franchise. Its diagonal placement is inspired by modern automotive aesthetics and is a tribute to the automotive industry that has been a foundation of the city of Detroit.

Stadium size numbers on the sleeves and back have been redesigned to better connect with the modern font style of the new “D” crest. The nameplate lettering is arched, as a way of connecting to the design of the team’s current nameplate lettering.

LUNDQVIST, HOLTBY FLAWLESSLY GUIDE TEAMS TO VICTORIES

Henrik Lundqvist (NYR) and Braden Holtby (WSH) both posted shutouts on Monday to keep pace atop the NHL with 12 wins apiece:

* Lundqvist stopped all 31 shots he faced to record his 57th career shutout (second this season) and lead the Rangers to their 11th victory in their past 12 games overall as well as their ninth consecutive win at Madison Square Garden. At 16-3-2 (34 points), the Rangers are off to their best 21-game start to a season – in terms of wins and points – in the franchise’s 89-year history. They also have won nine straight home games for the first time since Nov. 10 – Dec. 15, 1971 (9-0-0); that is five games shy of the longest home winning streak in team history, set Dec. 19, 1939 – Feb. 25, 1940 (14-0-0).
* Lundqvist improved to 12-3-2 overall this season (1.74 GAA, .946 SV%, 2 SO), including a 7-1-1 record on home ice (1.55 GAA, .951 SV%, 2 SO). He also leads the League in goals-against average and save percentage.
* Holtby turned aside all 33 shots he faced to earn his 21st career shutout (first this season) and help the Capitals improve to 6-2-1 in their last nine contests. At 14-5-1 (29 points), the Capitals have equaled their second-best 20-game start to a season – in terms of wins and points – in the franchise’s 41-year history. They went 15-5-0 (30 points) through 20 games in 1991-92 and compiled a 14-5-1 record (29 points) in the opening 20 contests of 2010-11.
* Holtby picked up his fourth consecutive victory to improve to 12-4-0 overall this season (1.88 GAA, .926 SV%, 1 SO), including an 8-2-0 record on home ice (1.71 GAA, .937 SV%, 1 SO). He ranks second in the NHL in goals-against average and 10th in save percentage.

GOSTISBEHERE LIFTS FLYERS IN OVERTIME

The Hurricanes erased a two-goal deficit in the third period, but Shayne Gostisbehere scored 24 seconds into overtime to help the Flyers snap a three-game skid (0-1-2).

* Gostisbehere – a third-round selection (78th overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft who hails from Pembroke Pines, Fla. – registered his first career game-winning goal (2-1—3 in 7 GP). Via Elias, he became the third rookie in Flyers history to score a regular-season overtime goal. The others, also both defensemen: Murray Baron (March 13, 1991 at VAN) and Dmitry Yushkevich (April 16, 1993 at HFD).
* Claude Giroux added 1-2—3, including a shorthanded goal, for his first three-point performance since Dec. 20, 2014 at TOR (2-2—4). He paces the club with 7-9—16 this season (21 GP).
* Michal Neuvirth made 31 saves to improve to 5-2-1 in nine career appearances vs. CAR (2.56 GAA, .926 SV%, 1 SO).

RASK, BRUINS COMPLETE HOME-AND-HOME SWEEP

Tuukka Rask stopped a season-high 39 shots through overtime – and also turned aside all three attempts he faced in the shootout – to lead the Bruins to a sweep of their home-and-home series with the Maple Leafs.
* Rask, the 21st overall selection by Toronto in the 2005 NHL Draft, improved to 13-3-1 in 19 career regular-season appearances against his former club (1.80 GAA, .937 SV%, 2 SO). That includes a 6-2-0 record at Air Canada Centre (1.88 GAA, .940 SV%, 1 SO).
* Brad Marchand scored twice, including one shorthanded goal, to extend his point streak to five games (5-1—6) and goal streak to four contests (5-0—5), equaling a career high last achieved Feb. 28 – March 8 (5-1—6).
* Marchand shares first in the NHL with two shorthanded goals this season. He has registered more shorthanded goals than any other player since entering the League in 2009-10 (17).

AROUND THE RINKS

* The Avalanche scored four unanswered goals – including three in the third period – to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and snap a three-game skid (0-3-0). Matt Duchene provided his 11th goal of the season to extend his point streak to seven games (7-6—13). Ten of his 11 goals have come in November (11 GP); per Elias, he became the first Avalanche player to post a double-digit goal total in one calendar month since January 2006 (Marek Svatos and Alex Tanguay: 10).
* The Blues scored twice in the third period – including the tiebreaking goal by Robby Fabbri with 6:34 remaining in regulation – to overcome a 1-0 deficit and pick up their eighth consecutive victory over the Sabres dating to Feb. 18, 2011 (BUF: 0-7-1). Fabbri, the 21st overall selection in the 2014 NHL Draft, registered his third career goal (16 GP) and second game-winner (also Oct. 8 vs. EDM).
* Jonathan Quick stopped 33 shots, including all 15 he faced in the third period, to help the Kings bounce back from a Sunday loss and improve to 4-2-0 in their last six contests. Quick, who was pulled from Sunday’s 4-3 defeat at CAR, upped his record to 7-2-0 in nine career appearances vs. FLA (1.72 GAA, .937 SV%, 1 SO).

MILESTONES & BENCHMARKS

* Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist earned his 351st career win (all w/ NYR) to tie Terry Sawchuk for the third-most victories in NHL history by a goaltender with one franchise. The only two with more: Martin Brodeur (688 w/ NJD) and Tony Esposito (418 w/ CHI).
* Kings forward Marian Gaborik (900), Rangers defenseman Keith Yandle (600), Predators forward James Neal (500) and Maple Leafs defenseman Roman Polak (500) all played in milestone games.

Methodology

The views of 1,000 respondents are compiled into a party power brand index for each party that goes from 0 to 100, where 0 means that the party has no brand power and 100 means it has maximum brand power. A score above 50 is an indication of brand power for the party and its leader at this time.

The important factors in this weekly tracking include the direction of the brand strength or weakness and also the brand power of one federal party relative to another.

The data is based on random telephone interviews with 1,000 Canadians, using a four week rolling average of 250 respondents each week, 18 years of age and over. The random sample of 1,000 respondents may be weighted by age and gender using the latest census information for Canada, and the sample is geographically stratified to be representative of Canada.

The interviews are compiled into a four week rolling average of 1,000 interviews where each week, the oldest group of 250 interviews is dropped and a new group of 250 interviews is added. The current wave of tracking is based on a four-week rolling average of 1,000 Canadians (250 per week) ending November 20th.

A random telephone survey of 1,000 Canadians is accurate 3.1 percentage points, plus or minus, 19 times out of 20.

Turkey shoots down ‘Su-24’ jet used by Russia and Syria after violating its air space

Sources close to president confirm nationality of flaming Su-24 fighter seen spiralling into the ground in Syria

  • Turkish army shoots down Russian war plane on Syrian border
  • The jet violated Turkish air space and ignored warnings, army says
  • Pilots ejected themselves from plane, which went down on the Syrian side

The war plane shot down by Turkish military near its border to Syria was Russian, Ankara and Moscow confirms.

The plane, a Russian Sukhoi Su-24, was shot down by Turkish army F-16 fighter jets early Tuesday morning.

Turkish army officials say the Russian plane had violated the country’s air space close to the Syrian border and was shot down after ignoring several warnings.

However, Russia’s Ministry of Defense claims the jet was in Syrian airspace, and was shot down from the ground.

Footage of the incident has emerged on Turkish news websites and shows the plane engulfed in flames come crashing down in a woodland area.

Turkish media reports said the plane’s two pilots ejected by parachute, and that helicopters were deployed to capture them before they landed.

Footage from private broadcaster Haberturk TV showed a warplane going down in flames in a woodland area, a long plume of smoke trailing behind it.

SPIKE in the use of artificial urine recorded across West Australian workplaces

A SPIKE in the use of artificial urine to avoid spot drug tests has been recorded across West Australian workplaces, with drug dealers now selling the product as a package with methamphetamine.

SYNTHETIC urine has, on average, been detected once a month throughout Australia, but six positive tests were recorded in WA alone last month by Safework Laboratories.

The company has predominantly noted the “chillingly sophisticated” test-thwarting methods in the Pilbara, the state’s iron ore capital, but Safework marketing director and forensic toxicologist Andrew Leibie said positive results had also been recorded in Perth.

“Speaking to some of the clients primarily up in the Pilbara, with a lot of the fly-in-fly-out workforce, the bikie gangs or illegal drug dealers in Hedland and Karratha are actually selling methamphetamine with fake urine as a package deal,” Mr Leibie told AAP.

“It was state-wide, across several different industries, through effectively six different locations and probably four different companies.”

Cheats in the mining and construction industry are going to the extreme measure of wearing the fake urine on a belt or pouch against their body in order to keep it believably warm and on-hand in case of spot tests.

When a work site is tested for the first time, close to 10 per cent of employees record positive results for drugs, but once a site is consistently tested, the average is 4.7 per cent.

Mr Leibie spoke of the dangers of mine workers arriving on site under the influence of drugs, giving an example of a South Australian underground mine employee who worked around explosives but tested positive for numerous substances.

“He had a breath alcohol limit over .08, he was positive for cocaine, methamphetamine and opiates, and he’d rolled up and was completely off his face, insisting he was fine to go to work.”

It is not illegal to sell or buy artificial urine in Australia, but Mr Leibie said companies usually treated detection of the fake urine product as a positive drug test.

“It looks like urine, it acts like urine, in some cases it even smells like urine,” Mr Leibie said.
