Vancouver Giveaway Leads To 2-1 Loss To Kings In Overtime

CANUCKS IN DISSARY AS LOSING GAMES HAS NO END IN SIGHT

The Los Angeles Kings (15-8-1) entered the game tonight on a 3-game winning streak at home, playing game two of a four game home stand. Kings last game was against the Chicago Blackhawks on November 28. The overcame a two-goal deficit to win the game 3-2 in overtime.

The Vancouver Canucks (9-9-8) entered the game having lost 10 of their last 13 games, playing the last game of a four game road trip. The Canucks last game was against the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night, losing 4-0 to their division rivals.

Vancouver has lost 11 of their last 14 games.

OPENING PERIOD

The Canucks took a few minutes getting their legs, and their coach Willie Desjardins got a scare early when Vancouver gave up the puck, and Tyler Toffoli came in on Jacob Markstrom on a breakaway but Markstrom held his ground and turned away the scoring opportunity.

Vancouver settled down, and at 6:55 received a man advantage opportunity when Milan Lucic high sticked Alex Edler and the Canucks went on their first power play of the game. It didn’t long for Vancouver to make the Kings pay, as Daniel Sedin (12) on a slapshot scored on Jonathan Quick, assisted by Henrik Sedin (16) and Yannick Weber (4), at 7:39, and the Canucks were up 1-0. That would be the score at the end of the 1rst period.

Markstrom was outstanding in the period with timely saves. The Kings out shot Vancouver 12-6 in the opening period. Canucks were 1-2 on the power play. Kings 0-1 on their power play. Vancouver out hit the Kings, 16-12 but were pathetic on face-offs, winning only 5 of 20. Henrik Sedin was 0 for 8 on face-offs while Bo Horvat was barely better, at 2 for 7.

Alex Burrows took a bad retaliation penalty at the 20 minute mark of the first period for slashing Brayden McNabb, taking the Canucks off of a power play opportunity that Vancouver was on when Marian Gaborik took a penalty at 19:46 for holding Dan Hamhuis.

SECOND PERIOD

The teams started the middle period 4 on 4 for 1:46 thanks to the Burrows penalty at the end of the 1rst period that prematurely ended a Canuck power play.

The second period had no goals. Canucks were 0-2 on the power play. Kings, 0-2 on the power play.

Kings out shot Vancouver 10-9. Vancouver out hit the Kings, 13-7 and were better on face-offs this period, winning 10 of 20. Henrik Sedin was 3 for 8 on face-offs; Bo Horvat, 3 for 3.

Markstrom was outstanding in the period again, stopping at least half a dozen quality scoring chances.

THIRD PERIOD

The Canucks came into the final period with a record of 7-1-4 when leading after two periods.

Drew Doughty tied the game at 1-1, when he scored a power play goal at 6:54, assisted by Marian Gaborik (3) and Nick Shore (3). It was his 2nd goal against Vancouver in 30 career game.

And that is the way the 3rd period would end.

The Kings out shot Vancouver 15-1 in the final period, completely dominating Vancouver, with Jacob Markstrom outstanding in the Canuck net.

Los Angeles was 1-2 on the power play.

OVERTIME

The Kings carried a power play into overtime that started late in the 3rd period, which the Canucks successfully killed.

With Markstrom at 39 shots faced in the game, Alex Edler gave away the puck, and Jeff Carter took the puck, passing it off to Anze Kopitar, who made not mistake, burying the puck past Markstrom, giving the Kings a 2-1 victory at 2:02 of overtime.

The loss was Vancouver’s 8th loss in 9 games that have gone beyond 60 minutes.

CANUCKS JOTTINGS

Chris Higgins, Chris Tanev and Jake Virtanen did not play as they are nursing day to day injuries. Brandon Sutter and Ben Hutton still not fit to play.
Andrey Pedan, a defenseman, played his first game in the NHL as a forward. Alex Biega was called up from the Utica Comets for tonight’s hockey game with the injury to Tanev. It was Biega’s second game of the season with the Canucks.
Backup goalie Jacob Markstrom started in net for the Canucks as expected. Entered his 5th game, with a record of 1-1-1, 3.13 GAA and a .904 SV%.
Pedan was acquired from the NY Islanders in exchange for Alexandre Mallet and a third round pick in 2016, Nov. 25, 2014. Selected by the New York Islanders (3rd Round, 63rd Overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft
With Andrey Pedan playing tonight, the Canucks mad it seven different players that have made their NHL debut this season (Grenier, Shinkaruk, Virtanen, McCann, Hutton, and Gaunce being the others). According to Elias Sports Bureau, this is the most number players to make their NHL debut for the Canucks in a single season since six players did so during the 2007.08 season.
The last season where more than seven players made their NHL debut in a single season for the Canucks was in 1999.00 (eight players). The club record for NHL debuts in a single season is 11 which occurred during the 1973.74 season.
Only two Canucks failed to hit any Kings tonight: Alex Burrows and Henrik Sedin.
Matt Bartkowski led the Canucks in hits tonight with 6; followed by Derek Dorsett with 5; Dan Hamhuis, Adam Cracknell, Brandon Prust, and Bo Horvat, all had 3 each.
Vancouver was pathetic on face-offs, only winning 22 of 63. Henrik Sedin was 22 per cent, 5 for 23 (0 for 8 in the first period); Bo Horvat was 47 per cent, 8 for 17 (2 for 7 in the first period).
With tonights power play goal against, Vancouver has allowed 19 power play goals against on 85 chances this season. 13 for 55 on the road.

Brock Boeser has gone streaking in the NCAA, while the Comets have now won four in a row thanks to some stellar play from Canucks prospects.

Brock Boeser extended his point streak to six games, picking up a goal and assist over two games on the weekend. He is currently second among NCAA freshman with eight goals on the season, while he is tied for first in goals among 1997-born players.

Anaheim Dominates, Hands Vancouver First Shutout Loss Of Season, 4-0

Disappointment All A Round

Anaheim (9-11-5) dominated, cruising to an easy 4-0 win as Vancouver (9-9-7) was ineffective and uninspiring, in its first shutout loss of the season, and 10th loss in the last 13 games.

The Anaheim Ducks wasted little time after the opening face-off in taking the game over, as Shawn Horcoff (4) snapped a shot passed Ryan Miller, assisted by Andrew Cogliano (6) and Carl Hagelin (5) to take a 1-0 lead at 1:19.

The Canucks, 29th best fore-checking team in the NHL entering the game, lacked intensity and urgency after the opening goal, as the Ducks continued to bring their game to Vancouver, out hitting, out shooting and out skating Vancouver.

The Vancouver penalty kill was tested three times in the opening period, and would yield a power play goal late in the opening period,when Yannick Webber took a retaliation penalty at 18:18.

The Ducks scored on their power play with 2.1 seconds left in the opening period, as Rickard Rakell (6) on a wrist shot made it 2-0, assisted by Ryan Getzlaf (15) and Sami Vatanen (9) at 19:57.

The Canucks had one unsuccessful power play. Anaheim outshot Vancouver 14-8; out hit Vancouver 11-9. The Ducks were better on the face-offs as well, winning 12 of 18.

Vancouver lost Jake Virtanen for the remainder of the game after sustaining an upper body injury to his ribs, courtesy of Ryan Getzlaf, in the first period, as Anaheim routinely took the body to Vancouver players, leaving them feeling pain and hurting.

The second period was mostly the Canucks continuing to give the Ducks little to worry about in the Anaheim end with the lack of a sustained attack. And Anaheim doing a great job at protecting their lead with little opposition.

The Canucks likely deflated by the late first period goal; and the Ducks sensing no urgency to score more, it was not surprising there was no scoring or special teams action in the middle period. Ducks out shot Vancouver 9-8; out hit Vancouver 11-10. Ducks better on the face-offs again, 8 for 15.

Vancouver went into the final period with point streaks at risk, along with the possibility of being shutout for the first time this season. The Canucks should have been looking for a Chicago comeback type of result that defeated Anaheim on November 27, but it was not to be.

Exactly one minute into the period, Ryan Miller disappointed, as Jakob Silfverberg (2) scored on a slap shot on a break away, assisted by Nick Ritchie (1) and Ryan Kesler (8), putting Anaheim up 3-0.

Corey Perry scored on another break away, over Ryan Miller’s shoulder, at 8:39, with a wrist shot, unassisted.

With the Ducks up 4-0, Miller was pulled in favor of backup goalie Jacob Markstrom. Anaheim soon after was given a high sticking double minor on Chris Stewart for cutting Matt Bartkowski at 9:15. Vancouver did not score.

The Ducks are moving on up after a disastrous month of October, while Vancouver is moving down in the standings and treading water. Overall in November, Anaheim was 8-4-3, while Vancouver finished the month 4-7-3.

With the victory, the Ducks moved within two points of the Canucks.

Vancouver Battles Anaheim In Must Win Division Matchup

The Canucks (9-8-7) are in Anaheim (8-11-5) tonight, to take on their Pacific division rivals looking for that all important win against a division opponent, who they currently have a 4 point lead on in the standings.

Vancouver won 2-1 in a shootout at Anaheim on Oct. 12, their second straight victory going back to last season. The Canucks haven’t won three consecutive games against the Ducks since the 2007-08 season.

Canucks Still Leaving Points On The Table

Last game for Vancouver was the second game of their 4-game road trip against the Dallas Stars on Friday, November 27, a 3-2 loss in a shootout, after defeating Minnesota 3-2 on November 25 to start their week long road trip.

Vancouver is 1-7 in games decided past regulation (0-6 in overtime; 1-2 in shootouts).

For the Anaheim, they began a 6-game home stand last Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks. Chicago were not good visitors, erasing a two-goal deficit with 1:41 left in regulation play; and then scoring 1:53 into overtime, Anaheim losing 3-2.

Anaheim is 1-5 in games decided past regulation (0-4 in overtime; 1-2 in shootouts).

Vancouver has lost 6 of their last 8 games, while the Ducks will be trying to escape losing a third game in a row.

Both teams have been having a difficult season having success reaching the postseason. Anaheim has reached the postseason in 8 of last 10 years; Vancouver in 11 of the last 14 seasons.

Already Vancouver and Anaheim have lost 15 and 16 games respectively, and are trying to figure out how to play 60-minute hockey and dominant their opposition on a consistent basis.

The Ducks are moving on up after a disastrous month of October, while Vancouver is moving down in the standings and treading water.

The Ducks are 4-1-3 at home in November with Vancouver 2-4-3 on the road this month.

Overall in November, Anaheim is 7-4-3 (tied for 4rth most points in the NHL in the month), while Vancouver is 4-6-3 (tied for 10th most points in the NHL in the month).

Power Play Not Producing

Vancouver have scored on 11 of 53 man advantages in the past 13 games, but they were only 1 for 7 chances against the Stars.

Canucks are 18 for 88 man advantages in 24 games, for 20.5 per cent, tied for 10th best.

Penalty Kill Impotent

The Canucks penalty kill has been abysmal over the last 13 games, giving up 14 goals on 46 opportunities. Canucks have allowed 17 goals in 76 penalty kill opportunities, for 77.6 per cent, 22nd in the NHL.

In the last 13 games, Vancouver has 20 even strength goals for and have 18 allowed even strength goals.

Anaheim, has scored on 10 of 38 man advantages in their last 14 games. With the best penalty kill in the NHL, their penalty kill has allowed 8 goals on 52 opportunities this month.

In their last 14 games, the Ducks have 20 even strength goals for and have allowed 24 even strength goals.

The Canucks are led by Daniel and Henrik Sedin who have 18 and 17-points respectively in their last 13 games.

For Anaheim, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, with 14 and 13 points in their last 14 games, lead the Ducks.

Vancouver Loses 3-2 In ShootOut To Dallas Stars

CLOSE DOESN’T CUT IT

The Vancouver Canucks (9-8-7) entered the game against the Dallas Stars (18-5-0) in 3rd place in the Pacific division and in a playoff position.

The Stars, top team in the Central division and the Western Conference, had not lost back to back games during the season.

The Canucks defeated Minnesota Wild in their last game on November 25, 3-2; Dallas lost in their last game on November 24 to the Ottawa Senators, 7-4.

The Stars power play second best behind the Boston Bruins; the Canucks penalty kill allowing 12 power play goals against in the month of November (12 games). Vancouver’s power play ranked 7th in the NHL.

When the Canucks met Dallas on October 27, the game went into overtime with Vancouver losing 4-3.

Tonight’s game was that close, and as it was last visit to Texas, not in Vancouver’s favour, and the Canucks are tied with Arizona for 3rd place in the Pacific division with 25 points.

Jaime Benn notched his 17th goal of the season on the power play to open the scoring, assisted by Patrick Sharp (11) and Tyler Seguin (20), making it 1-0 Dallas at 15:27 in the first period. The opening period ended with Dallas up 1-0. Canucks outshot the Stars 15-8.

In the second period, the Canucks waited little time in answering the Stars first goal, as Daniel Sedin (11) off a pass from Janick Hansen (8) scored an even strength goal to tie the game 1-1.

Soon after entering the final half of the middle period, Dallas took a 2-1 lead on a great shot on a Stars power play that Ryan Miller should have had by Jason Spezza, assisted by Patrick Sharp (12) and John Klingberg (21) at 11:52.

The Canucks outshot the Stars 21-14 over two periods. Vancouver power play 0-3 while Dallas was much better at 2-3 after two.

Vancouver kept battling, and it paid off as Henrik Sedin (8) scored with 4:10 left in regulation play on the power play, assisted by Daniel Sedin (16) and Radim Vrbata (6) to even the game at 2-2.

Nothing would be decided the rest of the way in regulation and the game went into overtime.

Overtime was frantic and both teams had their chances. Canucks with a shot on the Dallas net with Antti Niemi out of the net but he rushed back for the save. And Dallas with a two minute power play when Vancouver was called for too many men on the ice.

But alas nothing was resolved in the overtime and off to a shootout the two teams went with Dallas the victor and winning by a score of 3-2.

The shootout was the first for Dallas this season.
