Maple Leafs Dump Canucks 4-2

CANUCKS BANTER     By Andrew Chernoff    November 15, 2015Canucks

Out Played, Out Coached, Out Scored

Goaltender James Reimer made 43 saves to win his third straight game, leading the Toronto Maple Leafs (5-8-4) to a 4-2 victory against the Vancouver Canucks (7-6-5) at Air Canada Centre.

The game was the Canucks third straight loss at the Air Canada Centre, and the first Saturday game victory for the Maple Leafs this season. They were (0-3-2) entering the game.

The game was the sixth consecutive game the Canucks have trailed in at least some point during the game.

James van Riemsdyk, PA Parenteau, Shawn Matthias and Joffrey Lupul scored for Toronto (5-8-4), which has won three in a row.

Jannik Hansen and Alexandre Burrows scored for the Canucks (7-6-5), who are 1-3-1 with two games remaining on a seven-game road trip. Miller made 36 saves

Captain Henrik Sedin was not happy with the Canucks’ overall performance.

“We made way too many mistakes,” Sedin said. “We were sloppy. We didn’t get anything going. We’re still making way too many mistakes, and we’ve got to stop talking about that we’re a young team. We have to simplify things. Five-on-five we have to get away from those turnovers and easy goals for the opponent.”

Willie Desjardins and the Canucks underestimated the Toronto Maple Leafs. They came into the game with their struggles on special teams unsolved, and unprepared to adjust to a “Babcock” coached hockey team, that clearly out played the Canucks 5-on-5, and on special teams.

The Canucks have no sense of urgency it seems, as they continue to have important points slip away.

While other teams in the Pacific Division continue to climb up the standings, the Canucks are continuing their descent further down in the division without any resistance, as they continually show their inability to solve issues that continue to befell them game in and game out.

Vancouver Canucks are allowing 2.56 goals per game and are killing 79.2 percent of their power play chances (42 of 53) overall. On the road, it is 76.7 percent (23 of 30).

The Canucks finished tonight’s game having surrendered a power play goal in six straight games. They have not given up power play goals in six consecutive games since the start of the 2009.10 season when they allowed PPGs in their first six games from October 1 to 16.

Coincidentally, the 2009.10 season was the last time the Canucks’ penalty kill did not finish in the top-10 of the NHL. For the past five seasons, Vancouver’s penalty kill has been ranked among the ten best in the league including last season when it finished second overall at 85.7 percent behind only Minnesota (86.percent).      Canucks.com

The Vancouver Canucks are averaging 2.83 goals per game and are scoring on 15.8 percent of their power plays. Vancouver has outscored the opposition in those 5 games, 11-8 at even strength, but have been outscored 9-2 on special teams.

To the point, the power play and penalty kill have looked in need of a defibrillator.

CANUCKS JOTTINGS

  • Vancouver has lost 6 of their last 9 games.

  • Miller has given up 14 goals in his last 4 games.
  • The Canucks are 1-6 in their last 7 games playing on 1 days rest and 1-5 in their last 6 overall.
  • The Canucks leave Toronto 5-3 in the last 8 meetings and 12-3 in the last 15 meetings overall.
  • Canucks are 6-5-1 in Toronto in this 21rst century going into the game tonight, and 27-32-11 overall in Toronto.
  • Vancouver is 2-for-22 with the man advantage over its last 7 games and has allowed 8 power-play goals in the past 6 games
  • Ten of Vancouver’s 11-losses have come by one goal – five in overtime and one in a shootout; tonight’s game was the first loss this season by 2-goals.

RANGERS, BLUES LOOK TO CONTINUE RECORD-SETTING STARTS

The Rangers and Blues – two teams that have equaled their best 15-game starts to a season in franchise history – look to improve upon their record-setting runs when they face off at Madison Square Garden. At 11-2-2 (24 points), the Rangers have matched their best 15-game start to a season – in terms of wins and points – in the franchise’s 89-year history (also 1990-91: 11-4-0 and 1971-72: 10-1-4). At 11-3-1 (23 points), the Blues have equaled their best 15-game start to a season – in terms of wins – in the franchise’s 48-year history (4x, most recently 2013-14: 11-2-2).

Both clubs are coming off shutout victories on Tuesday: Henrik Lundqvist made 33 saves to lead the Rangers to a 3-0 win vs. CAR, while Jake Allen stopped all 24 shots he faced to guide the Blues to a 2-0 triumph at NJD. The Rangers also are on a 10-game point streak (8-0-2), including six consecutive victories, while the Blues have won six of their last seven outings.

This marks the first of two meetings between these teams in 2015-16 and their lone contest at Madison Square Garden. Last season, Vladimir Tarasenko scored a highlight-reel goal, picked up an assist on the tying marker with 5:27 remaining in regulation and then potted the decisive tally in the shootout to lead the Blues to a 4-3 victory on Nov. 3 at NYR. Overall, St. Louis is 8-0-1 in its past nine visits to Madison Square Garden dating to Oct. 12, 1998 (NYR: 1-7-1).

OVECHKIN TRIES TO SET GOAL-SCORING RECORD IN FRONT OF FEDOROV . . .

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who has 483 career goals, looks to set the NHL record for goals by a Russian-born player when Washington visits Detroit at Joe Louis Arena.

Ovechkin currently shares the record with Sergei Fedorov, the longtime Red Wings forward who finished his NHL career with the Capitals and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday. Both clubs will honor Fedorov, who will be in attendance, prior to Tuesday’s game.

“It’s going to be cool,” Ovechkin told the Washington Post.

“It’s going to be something that’s a special moment for me. Obviously, it’s going to be nice to see him out there. It’s a big moment for him and for me as well going to be, if I’m going to break the record. You never know.”

“I would hug him in his uniform [if he breaks the record],” Fedorov added.

“He’d be all wet and my suit would be ruined, but I wouldn’t care. I’ll put it somewhere in the closet. I’d cherish that moment.”

This game also marks the first time that Red Wings defenseman Mike Green faces his former club. Green, the 29th overall selection in the 2004 NHL Draft, played his first 10 NHL seasons with the Capitals, registering 113-247—360 in 575 contests. His 360 points rank fifth in franchise history for a defenseman, while his 113 goals share third (w/ Calle Johansson).

“I was there a long time and obviously, sometimes change is good. I felt I was becoming a little bit stagnant there, so I wanted to evolve,” Green told NHL.com.

“It’ll be strange, but I’ve moved forward now. I think it’s more exciting than anything. I know the personality in the dressing room and how most of these guys play, so it will be fun. But it will be fun because we’re competing.”

. . . TEAMS LOOK TO CONTINUE RECORD-SETTING STARTS

Three teams – the Rangers, Stars and Capitals – look to continue their record-setting starts to the season:

* At 10-2-2 (22 points), the Rangers have equaled their best 14-game start to a season – in terms of points – in the franchise’s 89-year history (also 1971-72: 9-1-4 and 1990-91: 11-3-0). They currently are on a nine-game point streak (7-0-2), including five consecutive wins.
* At 12-3-0 (24 points), the Stars are off to their best 15-game start in the franchise’s 48-year history. They have won six of their last seven games overall, including three straight, and boast a 5-1-0 record this season at American Airlines Center.
* At 10-3-0 (20 points), the Capitals have matched their best 13-game start to a season in the franchise’s 41-year history (also 1991-92: 10-3-0). They have won four of their past five games overall and are 4-1-0 this season as visitors.

MONDAY’S RESULT
Home Team in Caps
Arizona 4, ANAHEIM 3 (OT)

* The Coyotes also won their first game against the Ducks behind strong performances from their rookies. On Oct. 14, Domi posted 1-1—2 and Duclair recorded his first career hat trick in a 4-0 victory at ANA. The Coyotes face the Ducks three more times this season: Nov. 25 at ARI, Feb. 5 at ANA and Mach 3 at ARI.
* Domi (7-6—13) and Duclair (6-2—8) have combined for 13-8—21 through the Coyotes’ opening 14 games of the season, including one-third of the club’s goals (13 of 39).
* Domi shares first among rookies in goals (w/ Oscar Lindberg, NYR) and also ranks second in points, behind Blackhawks forward Artemi Panarin (4-11—15).
* Boedker notched his first overtime goal in the regular season (397 GP). He also has scored two overtime goals in the playoffs (20 GP), in Games 3 and 4 of the 2012 Western Conference Quarterfinals at CHI.

MILESTONES & BENCHMARKS

* Coyotes captain Shane Doan appeared in his 1,408th career game to surpass Dale Hunter (1,407 GP) and move into sole possession of 33rd place on the NHL’s all-time games played list. He now is one game shy of tying Paul Coffey (1,409 GP) for 32nd place.

LOOSE PUCKS

Ducks teammates Ryan Kesler and Sami Vatanen both collected 1-1—2 . . . Coyotes forward Dustin Jeffrey picked up one assist in his first NHL appearance since April 13, 2014 at PHX (w/ DAL) . . . ICYMI: Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane, Stars forward Tyler Seguin and Canadiens goaltender Mike Condon were named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Nov. 8.

CANUCKS BANTER: All-Time Canuck 10 Or More Goal Games

CANUCKS BANTER     By Andrew Chernoff    November 9, 2015

image

On March 28, 1971, the Canucks made history, defeating the California Golden Seals 11-5. It marked the first time in their history that the Canucks hit double digits in a game. Two years later, the Seals returned the favour, becoming the first team to hit double digits against the Canucks.

In total, the Canucks have been involved in 23 games where one of the teams scored ten or more goals. Not surprisingly, most of these games came during the high-scoring 1980’s. There have been no double-digit games between 1992-93 and 2009-10.  Canuck Library

NOTE: My research into double-digit games between 2010-11 and 2014-15 involving the Canucks has not indicated any. The current 2015-16 season has none.
