Canucks Suffer Second Straight Loss, Islanders Win 3-2

CANUCKS BANTER     By Andrew Chernoff    MARCH 1, 2016

The Canucks looked to start March on a winning note, as they welcomed the New York Islanders to Rogers Place, for the last game of the season series between the two teams on Monday night.

Vancouver could not find a way to win against division rival San Jose on Sunday afternoon, and all the puck luck was bad against the Islanders, as the Canucks lost 3-2, New York’s first win on their Western Canada road trip, after losing to Edmonton.

Linden Vey with a power play goal, and Daniel Sedin with his second goal in consecutive games; Ben Hutton and Henrik Sedin with assists; and Jacob Markstrom stopped 21 of 24 shots for a .875 Sv%, to lead the Canucks.

The Canucks started the game without Radim Vrbata (who missed his third consecutive game with a lower body injury)and Jannick Hansen (hurt in the morning skate) in the line-up. Yannik Weber was moved upfront in a forward assignment as a 4rth line winger, as Brendan Gaunce recalled from the Utica Comets earlier in the day, did not make it in time for the game puck drop.

San Jose Sharks are up next for Vancouver, on Thursday night.

GAME REVIEW

The Canucks started the game out shooting the Islanders 3-0 in the first three and a half minutes of the game, but the Islanders would score the first goal of the game, on their first shot of the game, as the puck deflected off Dan Hamhuis and past Jacob Markstrom, to put New York up 1-0.

Travis Hamonic, his 5th goal, at 4:20, assisted by Matt Martin (9) and Casey Cizikas (17).

With 10:20 left in the period, the Canucks got the first power play of the game, as the Islanders had too many men on the ice. The Canucks were out dueling the Islanders in the face-off wins, 6 for 8 at this point of the game.

The Canucks would capitalize on the man advantage, as Linden Vey would score off a Ben Hutton rebound, and tie the game up at 1-1 at 10:42. Vey, his 3rd goal of the season, assisted by Ben Hutton (18), on the power play.

With seven minutes left in the first period, Canucks were out shooting New York 5-1 and were 9 for 11 in the face-off circle.

The Islanders would go to the power play with 5:15 left in the opening period, as Matt Bartkowski would visit the sin bin for boarding.

The Islanders had no shots on their power play as Vancouver were successful in killing it. The Islanders only shot up to this point was at 4:20 of the period, when they scored.

The Islanders went 14:30 in the period between shots.

The Canucks started the middle frame like the first, out playing the Islander. The were outshooting them 3-0 at the five minute mark of the period and continuing to get scoring chances to go up by a goal.

At 7:33, Emerson Etem of the Canucks and Travis Hamonic of the Islanders received five minutes each for fighting.

The game continued to be physical as the Islanders continued to challenge Vancouver. Derek Dorsett of Vancouver and Matt Martin of the Islanders, would receive fighting majors at 11:43.

Jacob Markstrom made an outstanding save on a deflection by Ben Hutton on his own net, to keep the score at 1-1 with 5:30 left in the game. The Islanders would challenge the call, and after a review, the referees would rule the puck clearly crossed the goal line to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead.

Anders Lee, his 10 goal, on a deflected shot off Ben Hutton, assisted by Thomas Hickey (7) and Kyle Okposo (32).

Islander 2-1 after two periods.

Vancouver would get an early third period scoring opportunity in the opening seconds of the period when Sven Baertschi was robbed by the Islanders Thomas Greiss.

The Canucks would get their second power play of the game when Sven Baertschi was tripped by Travis Harmonic at 3:48. Vancouver would be unable to strike for a second goal on the power play and the game would remain 2-1 Islanders.

With 12:57 left, the Canucks were getting their chances but the Islanders were out shooting Vancouver in the period 7-6 and were dominating the face-offs in the game having won, 24 of 42 up to this point.

Daniel Sedin would score his 24rth goal of the season, and second in two games, at 10:52, assisted by Henrik Sedin (38), to tie the game at 2-2.

The Islanders would respond quickly, to retake the lead at 3-2, when a bouncing slap shot by Thomas Hickey would elude Markstrom and go in at 12:55.

With 2:28 left in regulation play,  Jacob Markstrom was pulled by the Willie Desjardins for an extra attacker, in an effort to get the equalizing goal and tie the game.

Vancouver had great puck movement and pressure in the Islander end, and great chances to get the 3-3 goal but with all the bodies in front of the net, and Thomas Griess stopping the shots that made it on net, the Canucks would run out of time.

Canucks, another one goal loss, 3-2 to the Islanders, and their second consecutive loss on their five game home stand.

The Vancouver Canucks (24-25-12) host the New York Islanders (33-20-7) tonight at Rogers Place, in a  game the Canucks are looking to resume their winning ways, in game four of their five game home stand, as they chase both the San Jose Sharks and the Colorado Avalanche for a playoff spot.

Vancouver is 2-1 on their home stand, and are 5-7-2 in their last 14 at home; and 4-6-1 overall in their last 11 games.

The Canucks are 12 points behind the Sharks for 3rd  and the final playoff spot in their division; and 8 points behind Colorado for the final wild card spot in the Western conference.

The Canucks are 10-10-3 in their last 23-games overall.

Jacob Markstrom makes his 11th game start in 2016, and he is 6-3-1 in his last 10 game starts with a 2.54 GAA, and .917 Sv%.

Markstrom has lost his last two starts, 5-2 at home to Calgary on February 19;  and 5-2 in Minnesota on February 15.

The New York Islanders’ come to Vancouver smarting from  a loss to the Edmonton Oilers, who had lost seven straight games entering Sunday’s action, and ended the Islanders’ three game winning streak.

New York started their Western Canada road swing with a 2-1 win over Calgary on Thursday night, before stumbling to the Oilers. They are 4-4 in their last 8 road games.

The Isles will look to rebound as they head to Vancouver to face the Canucks.
The Isles dominated the game with Vancouver at Barclays Center on January 17th, outshooting the Canucks 48-26, but fell 2-1 in a shootout.
The Isles are 0-2-1 in their last three games against the Canucks, but each of their last two March games in Vancouver have been memorable: In 2010, rookie John Tavares had five points in a 5-2 win while in 2014 the Isles exploded for seven third period goals for a 7- 4 win.    Source: http://www.nyiskinny.com/

Islanders are 3-1-1 in their last 5 games overall, with a 13.3 PP% and a 92.8 PK%; and they have scored a total of 10 goals for, while allowing 8 goals against, in that span.

The Isles are 17-5-2 against the Western Conference, including 12-0-2 at home. The Isles have the most wins of any Eastern Conference team against the Western Conference (Tampa Bay is 15-9-2 and the Rangers are 15-8-2).

Since January 6, Vancouver boasts the 5th-highest penalty kill percentage overall in the NHL at 88.1 percent (52 for 59).

Since January 9, at Rogers Place, the Canucks own the NHL’s 5th-highest home power play percentage at 27.6 percent (8 for 29).

CANUCKS PREVIOUS GAME

The Canucks fell short of a third straight win, surrendering four unanswered goals in the third period of a 4-1 loss to San Jose on Sunday, in a key divisional game, moving no closer to the Colorado Avalanche and the Sharks for an NHL Western conference playoff spot.  .

Daniel Sedin had the only Canucks goal, his 23rd of the season; Henrik Sedin and Ben Hutton had assists. For Daniel, with the goal, he became the 60th player in NHL history to reach 350 career goals (and the 5th Swede to do so). Ryan Miller stopped 24 of 27 shots for a .889 Sv% for his 4rth loss of February.

Miller finished the month of February with a record of 3-4-1 with a GAA of 2.26 and .929 Sv%.  He has registered a .929 save percentage over his last 13 games and is 4-7-2 with a 2.38 GAA.

NEWARK, N.J. — Vancouver Canucks captain Henrik Sedin might not return to the lineup until after the All-Star break because of an upper-body injury sustained Sunday against the New York Islanders.

Sedin did not practice with the team on Monday at AmeriHealth Pavilion in Newark, N.J.

“We’ll probably send him back [to Vancouver] so he won’t have any more games the rest of the road trip,” Canucks coach Willie Desjardins said. “Hopefully he’ll be ready after the All-Star break. I think it’s probably a 10-day injury or so.”

The Canucks play the fourth of a six-game road trip at the New York Rangers on Tuesday. They close out the trip at the Boston Bruins on Thursday and at the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, then return home to play the Nashville Predators on Jan. 26. The 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game is Jan. 31 in Nashville.

Sedin sustained the injury late in the first period of a 2-1 shootout win and did not return. Sedin was hit into the side boards by Islanders forward Mikhail Grabovski, who received a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct.

Daniel Sedin knows his twin brother won’t like having to sit at a time when the Canucks are coming off two straight victories.

“He’s not too happy; he wants to play every game and he’s upset,” Daniel said. “But he has to face the facts that if he’s not 100 percent, he needs to rest. It’ll be tough playing a few games without him.”

Henrik, who has nine goals and 37 points in 44 games this season, missed two games with a lower-body injury in December.

In his absence, Desjardins will likely have Jared McCann center Daniel Sedin and Radim Vrbata on the top line.

“[McCann] is a lot of faster than Henrik,” Daniel Sedin said with a grin. “They are different players. Jared plays with speed and tries to beat guys 1-on-1. We played together before Christmas and did a good job. We’re hoping for the best against a good team [Tuesday night].”

RADIM VRBATA SCORES WINNER IN SHOOT OUT

The Vancouver Canucks (19-17-10) played the third game of their 6-game road trip this afternoon against the New York Islanders ( 20-18-8) at Barclays Center.

The Islanders took Vancouver to overtime, with a last minute goal in regulation, and then with nothing settled, both teams ended up in a shoot out, where Radim Vrbata would score the only goal between the two teams, as the Canucks  would  win their 4rth shoot out game of the season, and win their second game of the road trip, defeating New York, 2-1 in SO.

Vancouver is now 11-9-5 against the Eastern Conference, and and 6-5-1 against Metropolitan division teams.

Ben Hutton, with his first goal in the NHL in the second period; and Ryan Miller, who stopped 47 of 48 shots for a .979 Sv%, along with Vrbata’s shoot out goal, led the team effort, for the Canucks.

Bo Horvat’s points streak ended at 6 games (6-3=9), while Radim Vrbata’s points streak also ended, at 3 games (1-2=3).

Miller is 4-4-1 in his last 9 games overall, with a 2.95 GAA and .919 Sv%. He also has a record of 3-4-2 in his last 9 games on the road, with a 3.21 GAA and .909 Sv%.

For Vancouver, the victory gave them their 8th win in 13 games (8-3-2) and their 4rth win on the road in their last 6 games (4-1-1).

And the Canucks would  score their second consecutive opening game goal tonight, to go with the one on January 15 against Carolina, the first two since just before the Christmas break of 2015, after which they went eight consecutive games without be able to do it.

Vancouver had scored a power play goal in five straight games, that came to an end tonight as they were 0 for 4. In in their last 6 games, where they have had at least one man advantage, they are 5 for 20 during that stretch, 25 percent.

On the penalty kill, the Canucks were 3 for 3, and are 35 for 42 in their last 13 games, 83.3 percent; 15 for 17 in their last 7 games, 88.2 percent.

Vancouver is 2-1-0 on the six-game road trip that continues Tuesday night at the New York Rangers, game two in the Big Apple.

In the opening period, the Canucks were having issues shaking the pressure in the Islander zone to establish good puck possession and get some good scoring chances.

The Canucks were attempting to open the scoring for the second straight game but were finding it easier said than done.

Vancouver was out shot 6-1 by the Islanders with less than ten minutes left in the period, as scoring chances were either getting blocked or missing the net entirely.

The first power play of the game went to the Canucks at 12:42 when Matt Martin went off for holding Derek Dorsett’s stick. Canucks 0 for 1 with the man advantage.

In the last four minutes of the period, the Islanders started peppering the Canucks with scoring chances, and Vancouver would weather the storm, thanks to Ryan Miller, to keep the game scoreless.

With less than two minutes left, Henrik Sedin was given a hit by Mikhail Grabovski and went into the boards and onto the ice immediately. Grabovski would be given five minutes for boarding and a game misconduct. Matt Bartkowski would receive a roughing penalty for stepping in to take on Grabovski for the dirty hit. All this happening at 18:16.

The game would continue to heat up between the two teams, when players from both teams would take exception to some questionable stick play. Alex Biega would get the only penalty out of it, two minutes for high sticking Ryan Strome at 19:54.

The Canucks and Islanders would end a chippy period scoreless; but the intensity level would be high.

After one period:

  • Islanders out shot Vancouver 11 to 5; Face-offs 9 for 16 for Vancouver; Hits, 13 to 9 Islander.
  • Islanders had 5 giveaways to the Canucks 1; No Canucks had more than one shot.
  • Henrik Sedin was 4 for 5 on face-offs; Linden Vey, 2 for 3; Bo Horvat, 2 for 6.
  • New York would have a Corsi For of 20; Canucks, 15, in all situations 5-on-5

The second period would start without Henrik Sedin continuing in the game because of an upper body injury suffered from the Grabovski boarding incident in the opening period.

Canucks would receive some scoring chances from an early power play in the middle frame but would not score.

Vancouver would get another power play, their third of the game, when Marek Zidlicky would go off for roughing at 3:45. Scoring chances for the Canucks would continue on this power play, but they could not bury the puck.

After going 0 for 3 on the power play, Derek Dorsett would be assessed a penalty for roughing John Tavares at 5:50. Ryan Miller would make some great stops and Canucks would keep the game scoreless.

The Canucks would score the first goal of the game, on a wrist shot by Ben Hutton, his first goal in the NHL, at 9:46, from Daniel Sedin (22)and Jared McCann (5).

Vancouver has now opened up the scoring in two consecutive games, after going eight consecutive games with their opposition scoring the opening goal.

Jared McCann, Jake Virtanen, Brendan Gaunce, have been the other Canucks to score their first goal in the NHL this season.

Canucks would get a chance to go up by two goals with their 4rth power play opportunity of the game, when Ryan Strome received a penalty for cross checking Brandon Prust at 12:45.

Vancouver would make it 0 for 4 with the man advantage though, making it 1 for 18, 5.5 percent, in their last 9 road games, that’s including this game.

Second period would end with Canucks up 1-0.

In the second period:

  • Islanders out shot Canucks 13 to 12; Face-offs, 14 for 28 Canucks; Hits, 7 to 4, Islanders
  • Islanders, 7 giveaways to Canucks 2; Daniel Sedin leading Canucks with 3 shots after two periods;
  • Hutton, Edler, Horvat and McCann with 2. Linden Vey, 7 for 12 on face-offs after two periods.
  • Islanders would have a Corsi For of 33; Canucks, 22, in 5v5; Islanders CF 48 to Canucks 31, in all situations, after two periods.

The Islanders started the final period out shooting the Canucks 6-0 and getting a power play opportunity; all this by the 5:16 mark, with Jared McCann getting the penalty for delay of game.

Canucks would get their first shot of the period off a breakaway by Jared McCann when he came out of the penalty box but Jaroslav Halak would stop him in front of the net.

With 12:13 left in the final period, the Islanders continued to out shoot the Canucks by a wide margin, 13 to 1.

Jared McCann would have a partial breakaway inside the Islander blue line, this time he would try Halak’s right side, but once again, he was foiled.

With 8:52 left, the Canucks were getting big stops from Miller, as New York continued to out shoot Vancouver, 15 to 3.

Derek Dorsett, had a breakaway of his own, but lost the puck as he came in on Halak and tried a fancy move. Dorsett missing a great opportunity to make it 2-0.

Back to back saves by Miller with less than six minutes left, would keep Vancouver leading 1-0, as the Islanders were relentless in their pressure in the Canucks end.

Desjardins would call a timeout to give his team a breather on an icing call, to relieve some of the pressure from the Islanders domination in the third period.

With 4:09 left, the Islanders were out shooting the Canucks 43-20.

With 75 seconds left, Halak was pulled for the extra attacker for the Islanders, and an icing call with a minute left would put a face off in the Canuck end. New York would take a timeout to draw up a plan.

Canucks would win the faceoff, but get scored on in the final minute of regulation play, and the game would be tied up at 1-1.

Ryan Strome, his 5th of the season, from Nick Leddy(15) and Franz Nielsen (14), at 19:09.

And off to overtime the game would go. And then a shoot out, as nothing was settled in the overtime.

Radim Vrbata would score, John Travares would miss on the Islanders last chance, and the Canucks win 2-1 in a shoot out.

The Canucks move into a tie for 3rd place with San Jose with 48 points, in the Pacific division, a point behind Arizona who occupy 2nd spot with 49 points. Vancouver is three points in front of Anaheim and 9 points behind the 1rst place Los Angeles Kings.

Canucks Visit Islanders Looking To Make It Two Wins Straight

CANUCKS BANTER     By Andrew Chernoff    January 17, 2016

The Vancouver Canucks (18-17-10) play the third game of their 6-game road trip tonight against the New York Islanders ( 20-18-7) at Barclays Center.

Vancouver are going after their second win of the road trip, after splitting games in Washington and Carolina.

The Islanders are looking to sweep their three game home stand as they host the Vancouver Canucks in the first of two meetings between the teams this season.

Vancouver’s Bo Horvat has been red hot in 2016, and sits tied for 2nd place in NHL scoring with 9 points (6-3=9 PTS), courtesy of a 6 game points streak. He is also tied for the most goals in the New Year with his 6 goals, with Sam Bennett of the Calgary Flames.
