Vancouver Drops Fourth Game In A Row 3-2 To Dallas

CANUCKS BANTER     By Andrew Chernoff    December 3, 2015

CANUCKS IN NEED OF SHAKE UP AS LOSSES CONTINUE TO BUILD UP

The Canucks knew they had to bounce back against the Dallas Stars.

Ryan Miller knew he could not allow another bad goal.

For Jim Benning, Canucks GM, he felt Vancouver did not work hard and compete against the Kings. And he wasn’t happy about the team not sticking up for each other.

“I just felt that there were instances in that game where last year we (would have) stuck up for one another; when someone was picking on one of our guys … it was a pack mentality and as a team we stuck up for each other. For whatever reason, we didn’t stick up for each other that game. That was really disappointing for me to see that.”

The players knew the fans and their coach and general manager expected a much better effort and push back against Western Conference rival Dallas Stars.

Everyone wanted a Canuck win.

OPENING PERIOD

The Canucks took the game to the Stars from the opening faceoff, and within 56 seconds, had their first goal of the game off a point shot from Alex Edler (5), assisted by Henrik Sedin (17) and Daniel Sedin (17).

The Canucks momentum was affected by the two straight penalties, and even though the Stars did not score, it wasn’t long before Dallas would be getting more confidence and chances to score, and they did.

At 11:59, on a backhand shot by Valari Nichushkin (3), assisted by Patrik Nemeth (1), Dallas tied the game 1-1.

The Canucks continued to struggle after the first Dallas goal, as they got away from keeping the Stars in check.

Dallas outshot Vancouver 6-4 in the opening period. Vancouver outhit Dallas 9-8; and won 12 of 19 face-offs: Bo Horvat was 5-7; Henrik Sedin, 4-7; Adam Cracknell, 3-4.

Canucks penalty kill was 2 for 2 in the first period.

MIDDLE PERIOD

Dallas responded to Vancouver’s early first period goal, by scoring at 33 seconds. Tyler Seguin (14) on a snap shot, assisted by Valeri Nichushkin (6) and Alex Goligoski (7), gave Dallas the lead for the first time, 2-1.

Dallas out shot Vancouver by a wide margin in the period, 18-6, as they continued to dominate the game up and down the ice.

There were a few momentum changes where the Canucks had some good puck possession in the Stars end and quality chances to score, but overall Dallas dominated and Ryan Miller kept the Canucks down one goal.

Canucks outhit Dallas 12-5; and won 9 of 22 face-offs in the period. Henrik Sedin was 6 for 10; Bo Horvat, 3-4; Adam Cracknell, 0-1. Jared McCann was 0-7 in the period in face-offs. Vancouver was 0-1 on the power play. Canucks now 9 for 38 at home on the power play, 19 for 96 overall.

FINAL PERIOD

The Stars started the final period, the same way they started the second. They kept Vancouver on the defensive and challenged Ryan Miller, looking for that backbreaking goal that would take the wind out of Vancouver’s sails.

The Canucks kept battling though, and were rewarded when Jannik Hansen scored his 8th goal of the season, on a backhand shot in front of Kari Lehtonen, at 5:31, assisted by Henrik Sedin (18). The goal was on Vancouver’s 12th shot of the game.

Vancouver got their second wind, and the fans became alive and appreciative as the Canucks pushed for that tie-breaking goal.

But alas, the Stars would score  the tie breaking goal on a fine effort by Patrick Sharp (9), on a wrist shot through the legs of Miller at 14:01 , assisted by Alex Goligoski (8), giving Dallas a 3-2 lead.

Things continued to unravel for Vancouver, as Alex Edler got two minutes for slashing on Tyler Seguin in front of the Canuck net, at 14:23. Dallas was unable to score on the power play, and was now 0 for 3 in the game with the man advantage.

Canucks turned their attention to getting a tying goal with urgency. With just over two minutes left, the Canucks pulled Miller for the man advantage, and Dallas would score as Jason Spezza (11) shot the puck down the ice and into an empty net, to make the score 4-2 for the Stars. Unassisted.

And that would be the final score: 4-2 Dallas. Vancouver was outshot 34-16.

Canucks 4rth loss in a row. Canucks 10th loss in a row to the Dallas Stars.

Vancouver’s 12th loss in their last 15 games. Second loss in a row at home: 3-5-3 at Rogers Place this season.

Vancouver Loses 3-2 In ShootOut To Dallas Stars

CANUCKS BANTER     By Andrew Chernoff    November 27, 2015

CLOSE DOESN’T CUT IT

The Vancouver Canucks (9-8-7) entered the game against the Dallas Stars (18-5-0) in 3rd place in the Pacific division and in a playoff position.

The Stars, top team in the Central division and the Western Conference, had not lost back to back games during the season.

The Canucks defeated Minnesota Wild in their last game on November 25, 3-2; Dallas lost in their last game on November 24 to the Ottawa Senators, 7-4.

The Stars power play second best behind the Boston Bruins; the Canucks penalty kill allowing 12 power play goals against in the  month of November (12 games). Vancouver’s power play ranked 7th in the NHL.

When the Canucks met Dallas on October 27, the game went into overtime with Vancouver losing 4-3.

Tonight’s game was that close, and as it was last visit to Texas, not in Vancouver’s favour, and the Canucks are tied with Arizona for 3rd place in the Pacific division with 25 points.

Jaime Benn notched his 17th goal of the season on the power play to open the scoring, assisted by Patrick Sharp (11) and Tyler Seguin (20), making it 1-0 Dallas at 15:27 in the first period. The opening period ended with Dallas up 1-0. Canucks outshot the Stars 15-8.

In the second period, the Canucks waited little time in answering the Stars first goal, as Daniel Sedin (11) off a pass from Janick Hansen (8) scored an even strength goal to tie the game 1-1.

Soon after entering the final half of the middle period, Dallas took a 2-1 lead on a great shot on a Stars power play that Ryan Miller should have had by Jason Spezza, assisted by Patrick Sharp (12) and John Klingberg (21) at 11:52.

The Canucks outshot the Stars 21-14 over two periods. Vancouver power play 0-3 while Dallas was much better at 2-3 after two.

Vancouver kept battling, and it paid off as Henrik Sedin (8) scored with 4:10 left in regulation play on the power play, assisted by Daniel Sedin (16)  and Radim Vrbata (6) to even the game at 2-2.

Nothing would be decided the rest of the way in regulation and the game went into overtime.

Overtime was frantic and both teams had their chances. Canucks with a shot on the Dallas net with Antti Niemi out of the net but he rushed back for the save. And Dallas with a two minute power play when Vancouver was called for too many men on the ice.

But alas nothing was resolved in the overtime and off to a shootout the two teams went with Dallas the victor and winning by a score of 3-2.

The shootout was the first for Dallas this season.

Vancouver Takes Minnesota With Wild Finnish

CANUCKS BANTER     By Andrew Chernoff    November 25, 2015

Two Per Cent More Does It

Vancouver Canucks (9-8-6)  started their four game road trip by taming the Minnesota Wild (11-6-3), giving them their first loss of their four game home stand, and their second loss at home this season.

Radim Vrbata had two goals, including a power play goal. The line of Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin and Jannick Hansen had four points ( Hansen his 7th goal; Daniel two assists for 15; Henrik an assist for 15).

Ryan Miller stopped 31 of 33 shots, for a .939 SV percentage. Vancouver was perfect on the power play and was 2 for 3 on their penalty kill, that goal going off of Edler’s skate and credited to Thomas Vanek.

The Wild came out strong in the opening period, pressing the Canucks with Ryan Miller playing strong as he patiently and eagerly anticipated his teammates getting their game legs sooner than later.

Minnesota got on the score sheet first with a power play goal by Thomas Vanek at 12:39, assisted by Mikko Koivu (15) and Mikael Granlund (9). It was the Canucks 8 power play goal against in 8 road games in November.

Vancouver kept challenging the Wild and Miller kept making timely saves, finally resulting in Radim Vrbata (5) scoring an even strength goal at 19:32, assisted by Jared McCann (3) and Alex Edler (9).

The Canucks started out with a stronger second period, taking the play to the Wild, and Miller continued to be strong in net for Vancouver, who took the momentum of the late first period goal in the middle frame.

In the final half of the second period, on the power play, Radim Vrbata (6) scored his second goal of the game, from Henrik Sedin (15) and Daniel Sedin (14), to put the Canucks up 2-1. It was the Canucks 6th power play goal in 8 road games this month. And that was the way the period end, with Vancouver up by a goal.

Vancouver out shot the Wild 10-5 in the second period, after being out shot 13-9 by Minnesota in the opening period.

Vancouver continued in the final frame where they left off in the middle period, and were rewarded at 5:21 on an even strength goal by Jannick Hansen (7), assisted by Daniel Sedin (15), Canucks now up 3-1.

At 12:48 of the period, Yannick Webber took a penalty, giving the Wild a great opportunity to get within a goal of Vancouver. While Minnesota was unsuccessful on the power play, the Wild took the momentum they created into the final five minutes of the game and turned it up a notch, pressing the Canucks and challenging them in the netural zone and in their own end.

With just under two minutes left in the game, the Wild pulled Devan Dubnyk out for a sixth attacker and the action got frantic and intense. Canucks found that their ability to withstand the Wild onslaught was wearing on them, and with 1:20 left in the game, Charlie Coyle (5) scored on a tip in from Ryan Suter (17) and Mikko Koivu (16).

Minnesota used their timeout and then the the frantic and intense action continued with the Wild continually trying to get their goalie out of the net again and get that sixth attacker back on the ice. The Canucks were not being so accommodating and eventually it happened and Minnesota was all in and giving it all they could when Vancouver got a pentalty.

Wild were now on the power play with six skaters to four. Alex Edler got two minutes for hooking with 33.4 seconds left. Wild were all over the Canucks net; Miller doing his best to follow the puck. Koivu misses a great backhand opportunity. Then Mikael Granlund with his great opportunity puts the puck over the net and out of play with 11.8 seconds left. The faceoff is a good one for Vancouver and they get the puck out and down the ice.

Canucks with in a frantic an exciting finish.

Alex Edler, Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin all had points, to continue their points streaks. Alex Edler: 0-4=4 in 3 games; Daniel Sedin: 5-5=10 in 6 games; Henrik Sedin: 2-7=9 in 5 games.

Bo Horvat had his assists streak stopped at two games: 0-2=2. Henrik Sedin had his goal scoring streak ended at two games: 2-0=2.

CANUCKS JOTTINGS

  • Jake Virtanen leads the team and leads NHL rookies in hits with 53.
  • Daniel Sedin has 10 points (5-5-10) in his last 6 games. He has had two four point performances in the last six games – Nov. 10 at CBJ and Nov. 21 vs CHI. He currently leads the team in points (25) and goals (10).
  • The Canucks are now 6-4-3 away from Rogers Arena this season.
  • The Canucks stopped allowing at least 3 goals against at10 straight games tonight.
  • The Canucks one goal victory tonight was just their 3rd in 15 one goal games this season. Vancouver won 22 of 31 one-goal games last season.

Next game: Friday, November 27 at the Dallas Stars.

Little In The Tank Costs Vancouver 3-2 Loss To Devils

CANUCKS BANTER     By Andrew Chernoff    November 22, 2015

Winning Streak Ends At One

The Canucks (8-8-6) looked to sweep their two-game home stand with a win over the New Jersey Devils (11-8-1) tonight at Rogers Arena, and move into a share of first place with the Los Angeles Kings in the Pacific Division.

Instead, Vancouver got shown the door by the New Jersey Devils, in a 3-2 loss that started another losing streak at Rogers Arena.

The Canucks haven’t  had consecutive wins since they beat the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 30 and the Arizona Coyotes on Nov. 2.

It was critical that the Canucks not squander the momentum gained from last night’s slump ending win, by following it up with a poor effort tonight against the Devils, a team that was desperate for a win themselves.

Henrik Sedin was disappointed in the loss, feeling the Canucks lost a great chance to build more momentum on top of the Chicago victory.

“Especially going on the road, a tough road trip, it was a chance for us to get moving up in the standings, start feeling good about ourselves and get some wins and get some momentum. That didn’t happen. I thought we played good enough to win.”, Henrik Sedin added.

There was an effort but not the intensity and urgency that was present in last night’s emotional 6-3 win over the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Chicago Blackhawks.

Cammalleri opened the scoring 65 seconds into the second period, set up Andy Greene’s power-play goal 91 seconds into the third and assisted on Adam Henrique’s goal eight minutes later for the Devils.

Henrik Sedin ended Schneider’s shutout bid with a shorthanded goal 7:21 into the third period after the Devils goalie misplayed the puck to Daniel Sedin in front of the net, and Radim Vrbata scored a power-play goal on a deflection with 0.6 seconds left.

New Jersey avoided  going winless on their three-game Western Canadian road trip which concluded tonight following losses in Calgary and Edmonton.

After welcoming Brandon Prust back to the line-up yesterday, the Canucks were hoping they would be bolstered by returning veteran Radim Vrbata, who missed the last two games with a groin injury. Except for his penalty shot, Vrbata did a good job of being inconsequential in the game, even with scoring Vancouver’s final goal with just tenths of a second left to play.

The Devils took advantage of the opportunity to do something Sunday night that they’ve never done before, sweep a season series from the Vancouver Canucks.

Winning in Vancouver never has been easy for the Devils, who are now 7-19-1 all-time and 2-5-1 since 1999-00.

The Canucks are  4-0 in games where Brandon Prust fights. Unfortunately, Prust had no fights. Canucks hand no win. Just saying.

Jacob Markstrom was 1-0-1 with a .914 save percentage and 3.41 goals-against after his 4-3 overtime loss to Montreal last Monday. He adds a loss to his season record, with his first regular season appearance of the year at Rogers Arena.

Markstrom made 19 saves for the Canucks, who have one win in their past six games (1-4-1).

Corey Schneider made 17 saves in the third period, stopping 36 shots in total, including a Vrbata penalty shot at 5:14 of the final period.

Vancouver had 38 shots to the Devils 22 shots.

The Canucks now get set for a 4-game road trip, starting with Minnesota on November 25 and finishing with Los Angeles on December 1.

In between they play the Dallas Stars on November 27 and San Jose Sharks on November 30.

CANUCKS JOTTINGS

  • Vancouver’s power play before tonight was 8 for 21 in its previous 5-games after going 0-16 the 5-games previous. Tonight, the Canucks were 1 for 7 on the power play.
  • Canucks have allowed 9 power play goals against in their last 10-games.
  • Vancouver’s penalty kill was 4 for 5 against the Devils.
  • Henrik Sedin’s shorthanded goal was his 7th shorthanded goal of his career.
  • Canucks outhit the Devils 14-12.
  • Vancouver had 7 giveaways and 6 takeaways tonight.
  • Vancouver has now surrendered three or more goals in 10 straight games.
  • Rookie defenceman Ben Hutton will be at least two weeks with a foot injury after blocking a shot Wednesday in Winnipeg.
  • Brandon Sutter will be out at least two weeks with abdominal injury.
  • Recalled Utica player Taylor Fedun, 27, could surface on the upcoming four-game road trip with the injury to Hutton.
