The Canucks had a mission Monday night, as self serving as it was, to end the Panthers’ 12-game winning streak in game two of Florida’s Western Canada road swing.

The Panthers’ winning streak, the longest since the Boston Bruins went 12-0-0 from March 2 to March 22, 2014, was put at risk as Florida sought their 13th consecutive win.

The Vancouver Canucks (17-16-10) played the last game of their 7-game home stand against the Florida Panthers (26-12-5) Monday night at Rogers Place.

For the second time this season, Vancouver would be spoilers to teams coming into Rogers Place on long consecutive winning streaks. First it was the Montreal Canadians. And now the the Florida Panthers.

Vancouver got their 6th win in their last 10 games, improving their record to 6-2-2, as they defeated Florida 3-2 in overtime.

The Canucks battled hard, with Jacob Markstrom, the Sedins and the youngsters, leading the way.

Daniel Sedin with two goals; Jake Virtanen, with his first goal since returning to the lineup on Saturday night against Tampa Bay; Henrik Sedin with two assists; and Jacob Markstrom, stopping 26 of 28 shots with a .929 Sv%.

Bo Horvat and Sven Baertschi had their point streaks continue, with an assist each on Jake Virtanen’s goal. Horvat now has 4 goals and 2 assists in his last 4 games; Baertschi, 2 goals and 2 assists in his last 3 games.

Markstrom is now 5-2-1 with a 2.19 GAA and .927 Sv%, in eight consecutive starts, since Ryan Miller injured his groin Dec. 20 at the Florida Panthers.

Emerson Etem, in his first game as a Vancouver Canuck, had an impressive debut, and drew two penalties, including the one that led to the winning power play goal in overtime.

Vancouver had a shaky start to the game, and a shaky end to the opening period.

Florida wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, as the Canucks surrendered the opening goal of the hockey game, the 7th opening goal on their seven game home stand by the opposition.

Jussi Jokinen, his 8th of the season, on a wrist shot, assisted by Reilly Smith (11) at 1:20, made it 1-0 Florida.

The Canucks once again were trailing early in a hockey game, where their opponent was dominating them in the play, catching them slow off the mark.

At 4:25, the Panthers’ Steven Kampfer received a penalty for holding Jake Virtanen giving the Canucks a man advantage opportunity to even the score at one apiece. Vancouver’s power play was unable to get a goal against the stingy penalty killing of the Panthers.

The bright spot for the Canucks was the play of the young players led by Bo Horvat, as he was robbed on at least two occasions by Roberto Luongo.

Roberto Luongo continued to stymie Vancouver as he came up on big on Emmerson Etem, Alex Burrows and Daniel Sedin as well, keeping the Canucks scoreless.

A tripping call on Brian Campbell for upending Emerson Etem, put Vancouver back on the power play for the second time in the period at 15:30. Once again, the Canucks came up empty, going 0 for 2 with the man advantage.

Just when you could see the Canucks game getting better and the momentum change, the Panthers scored a last minute goal, that took the wind out of the Canuck sails, going into the intermission.

Jonathan Huberdeau, his 7th goal, on a wrist shot, assisted by Aleksander Barkow (16) and Jaromir Jagr (17) at 19:27, to make it 2-0 Florida after the first frame.

Vancouver out shot the Panthers, 13 to 7; were 8 for 19 on face-offs; had 5 giveaways; were 0 for 2 on the power play; and 1 for 1 on the penalty kill.

Linden Vey was the best Canuck face-off man at 4 for 6; Daniel Sedin led Vancouver in shots with 3; Jake Virtanen, Bo Horvat and Jared McCann, had 2 shots each, in the first period.

In the middle frame, the Canucks came out skating with Florida, who had played the night before in Edmonton. And the Canucks pressure and persistence would pay off.

Daniel Sedin, with his 18th goal, would cut the Panthers lead in half, as his backhand shot would get by Roberto Luongo at 5:41, assisted by Henrik Sedin (26) and Radim Vrbata (9).

Nearing the halfway point of the period, Vancouver was out shooting the visitors 6-3 and 19-10 in the game.

Jared McCann would come close to getting the Canucks even as he had Luongo beaten but the goal post got in the way.

The middle frame ended 2-1 for the Panthers.

Vancouver and Florida had 8 shots each; Canucks were 10 for 22 on face-offs; had 4 giveaways; Florida had 3 giveaways.

Linden Vey was the best Canuck face-off man after two, at 5 for 9; Daniel Sedin and Jared McCann led Vancouver in shots with 4 each; Jake Virtanen, Bo Horvat and Emerson Etem, had 2 shots each, after two periods of play.

The Panthers went into the final period with a great opportunity to extend their consecutive winning streak to 13 games, with the 2-1 lead.

Just a minute into the 3rd period, the Canucks would get their 3rd power play opportunity as Bo Horvat drew a holding call for holding from Willie Mitchell at 1:05. Once again, Florida would successfully kill the penalty, handing the Canucks their third consecutive unsuccessful man advantage without a goal in the game.

Shots were a premium as both teams were struggling in that department which suited the Panthers more than the Canucks.

With 12:22 left in the final period, shots were 4-3 Florida, with the Panthers defensive game continually frustrating the Canucks puck possession.

As the period progressed, it seemed Florida raised their game up a notch as they could sense history in the making, while the Canucks looked like the team that played the night before.

With seven minutes left, and the Canucks seemingly unable to generate any offense due to the Panthers dominating play up and down the ice, it seemed more than likely, the Canucks would suffer a loss in the final game of their home stand.

But Vancouver would not go gently into the night, and after a great stop by Jacob Markstrom on a 3 on 1 by Florida, the Canucks would be inspired and finally put another goal by Roberto Luongo, off a face-off in the Florida end, to knot the game at 2-2.

Jake Virtanen, with his 2nd goal of the season, assisted by Bo Horvat (10) and Sven Baertschi (8), at 17:22.

Markstrom would have to continue to make some great stops in the final 2:38, as the Panthers did everything they could to get the go ahead goal, but time would run out in regulation play, with the game tied at 2-2.

The Canucks battled back and would at least get a point but the question on everybody’s minds: would Florida extend their consecutive winning streak?

Vancouver would go to the power play as Emerson Etem would draw another penalty as Jaromir Jagr would get penalized for hooking at 2:07.

Then for the second time this season, the Canucks would be consecutive game spoilers, as Daniel Sedin would score on the power play, ending Florida’s consecutive winning streak at 12 games.

Daniel Sedin, his 19th of the season, second of the game, on a wrist shot, assisted by Alex Edler (12) and Henrik Sedin (27) at 2:21.

The goal was Daniel Sedin’s 14th overtime winning goal which is a franchise best for the Canucks.

Daniel Sedin is now tied with Markus Naslund for the all-time lead in goals scored for Vancouver with 346.

As the Canucks were celebrating the win, the two benches would get into a scuffle, after words were exchanged.

Canucks Aiming To End Panthers’ 12-Game Winning Streak

The Vancouver Canucks (16-16-10) play the last game of their 7-game home stand against the Florida Panthers (26-12-4) tonight at Rogers Place.

Canucks mission, as self serving as it is, end the Panthers’ 12-game winning streak in game two of Florida’s Western Canada road swing.

Vancouver looks for their 6th win in 10 games, sporting a record of 5-2-2 in their last 9.

The Canucks are 2-1-2 against the Panthers in their last five games played.

Canucks are 8 goals from 11, 000 goals scored as an NHL franchise, according to NHL.com

The Panthers’ streak is tied for the 10th-longest in NHL history and the longest of any team that failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs the previous season, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

The 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins hold the NHL record with 17 straight victories.

Roberto Luongo will be in net for the Panthers tonight, and will face the Canucks for the 5th time since being traded and is 2-1-1 against his former team. It will be his 898th career game tonight.

Jacob Markstrom gets the call for his 8th consecutive start, his first start ever against his former team .

Markstrom is 4-2-1 with a .927 save percentage in seven starts since Ryan Miller injured his groin Dec. 20 at the Florida Panthers.

Bo Horvat is currently sitting on a three-game point streak (4-1-5). Since the start of the new year, Horvat shares the NHL-lead in goals scored (4) and is t-sixth in points (5).

Sven Baertschi has a goal in each of his last two games and three points (2-1=3).

Emerson Etem, acquired Friday in a trade with the New York Rangers, will make his Vancouver debut.

Jared McCann to play tonight, even though he missed the morning skate in place of Adam Cracknell.

In their last game, Vancouver lost for the third time on their 7-game home stand against the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday night at Rogers Place, 3-2 in overtime.

Bo Horvat, had a goal and an assist ; and Sven Baertschi, a power play goal, in the losing effort. Vancouver is now 5-3-1 in their last nine games. And 8-8-4 at home this season.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 32 of 35 shots in his 7th straight start, for a Sv% of .914.

Markstrom is now, 4-4-2 in his last 10 games, with a GAA of 2.12 and a Sv% of .929. On the home stand, he is 3-2-1, with a GAA of 2.42 and Sv% of .921.

In their previous game, Vancouver led by Bo Horvat’s two goals, including the winner on the power play with 1:06 remaining in regulation, defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2. Sven Baertschi, with a goal on his return to the lineup, also scored for Vancouver.

This morning the Canucks tweeted that Willie Desjardins feels that both Sbisa and Sutter are close to returning to the lineup.

Sbisa is ahead of Sutter and Sutter is very close. “They’ll both be with us at some point on our trip”

Vancouver sits in 3rd place in the Pacific division with 42 points, 4 points behind Arizona in 2nd place. They are 13 points behind Los Angeles; a point in front of Anaheim. They are two points ahead of San Jose and Calgary; 5 points in front of Edmonton.

San Jose has 3 games in hand on Vancouver; Anaheim and Calgary 2 games each in hand on the Canucks; Los Angeles and Arizona have played one less game each than Vancouver.

The Panthers come into the game having played the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night at Rexall Place, in the first game of their three game Western Canada road trip, where they extended their consecutive winning streak to 12 games, with a 2-1 victory.

Jaromir Jagr scored his 15 goal of the season unassisted; Jonathan Huberdeau scored the winner.

Goalie Al Montoya recorded his 50th career win, stopping 24 of 25 shot for a .960 Sv%.

Al Montoya now sports a 7-1-1 record this season, with a 1.67 GAA and 0.944 SV%.

Florida previously defeated the Ottawa Senators 3-2 last Thursday at Canadian Tire Centre. Reilly Smith had a goal, Jonathan Huberdeau had two helpers; Aleksander Barkov and Vincent Trocheck also scored.

Vancouver Out To Take Season Series From Lightning In Key Game

The Vancouver Canucks (16-16-9) play the 6th game on their 7-game home stand against the Tampa Bay Lightning (20-17-4) tonight at Rogers Place.

The Canucks will be out to regain 3rd place in the Pacific division all for themselves with a victory tonight, and leap frog over Anaheim, who defeated the St. Louis Blues last night 4-3.

In their last game, Vancouver led by Bo Horvat’s offensive outburst, defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2, winning their third of five games on their seven game home stand.

Bo Horvat, had two goals, including the winner on the power play with 1:06 remaining in regulation; and Sven Baertschi, with a goal on his return to the lineup, scored for Vancouver, to improve the Canucks record to 5-2-1 in their last eight games.

Horvat, after scoring his first goal in 28 games against Arizona on Monday night, now has 3 goals in two straight games, two on the power play. For Baertschi, he now has 4 goals and 2 assists along with 12 shots on net, in his last 6 games played.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 26 of 28 shots in his 6th straight start, for a Sv% of .929.

Markstrom is now, 4-2-1 in his last 7 games, with a GAA of 2.12 and a Sv% of .929. In his last nine games, he is 4-4-1, with a GAA of 2.02 and Sv% of .932.

In their previous game, Vancouver’s comeback attempt against the Arizona Coyotes on Monday night fell short, as the Canucks lost 3-2 in the fourth game of four consecutive games at home against Pacific division opponents.

Bo Horvat and Daniel Sedin scored for Vancouver. For Horvat, it was his first goal in 28 games; for Sedin, it was his 17th goal of the season, to lead all Canucks. Jacob Markstrom stopped 26 of 29 shots in his 5th straight start, for a Sv% of .897.

Vancouver has a 4-4-3 record against the Atlantic division opponents and 8-8-4 record against the Eastern Conference overall.

Jake Virtanen, who was loaned to Canada for the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, will return to the lineup. The No. 6 pick at the 2014 NHL Draft has one goal and three assists in 19 games with Vancouver but has not played in the League since Nov. 30.

Jacob Markstrom, will make his 7th consecutive start in net, with Ryan Miller backing him up.

Emerson Etem, the newest Canuck, acquired in a trade from the New York Rangers yesterday, will not play tonight.

The Canucks are 1-4-0 against the Lightning in their last five games played and 3-6-1 in their last 10 meetings, dating back to the 2007-2008 season.

The Canucks are in 4rth place, tied for 3rd with Anaheim, in the Pacific division of the Western Conference with 41 points, 3 points behind second place Arizona and 13 points behind division leaders Los Angeles. Vancouver is ahead of Calgary by a single point. Canucks are three points in front of San Jose, with Edmonton 4 points back.

The Lightning come into the game having played the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night at Rexall Place, staging a winning comeback by scoring three consecutive goals in the 3rd period and defeating the home team 3-2 in their second game of their 3 game Western Canada road swing. The Bolts had dropped four in a row in Edmonton and were 0-3-1 over that stretch; Tampa Bay is 5-10-1 all-time in Edmonton now.

Victor Hedman had a goal and two assists in the third period. Nikita Kucherov scored the tying goal for Tampa Bay; and Steven Stamkos, with his 18th goal of the season, scored the game-winner with 4:09 remaining. Goaltender Ben Bishop made 24 saves. The Lightning were 0 for 3 on the power play and 2 for 3 on the penalty kill.

Tampa Bay previously lost to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, 3-1 at Scotiabank Saddledome. The Lightning lost in regulation in the opening game of a multi-game road trip for the first time this season, dropping to 4-1-1 in such situations. Steven Stamkos netted his team-leading 17th goal of the season. Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop made his first start of 2016 and stopped 21-of-23 shots but was saddled with the loss. Tampa Bay didn’t have a power play in the loss to Calgary, the first time this season it’s gone a game without a power play.

Tampa Bay allowed its first power-play goal in its last 8 games, against Edmonton last night, bringing to an end their consecutive game streaks to an end without one at 7 games. The Lightning have now successfully killed 20 of 21 opponent power plays in their last 8 games. The Bolts penalty kill ranks tied for 21rst in the NHL at 79.3% overall.

Horvat Leads Canucks With Two Goals As Vancouver Defeats Carolina, 3-2

SPECIAL TEAMS LEAD CANUCKS TO WIN OVER HURRICANES

The Vancouver Canucks (16-16-9) never-say-die attitude against the Arizona Coyotes (16-18-7) pays off, led by Bo Horvat’s offensive outburst, as the Canucks win 3-2, their third win in five games on their seven game home stand.

Bo Horvat, with two goals, including the winner on the power play with 1:06 remaining in regulation; and Sven Baertschi, with a goal on his return to the lineup, scored for Vancouver to improve the Canucks record to 5-2-1 in their last eight games.

For Horvat, after scoring his first goal in 28 games against Arizona on Monday night, he now has 3 goals in two straight games, two on the power play.

Horvat, had his first career multi-goal performance in 109 games played, and also led the Vancouver to its eighth consecutive victory over the Hurricanes at Rogers Arena dating to January 12, 2002 (0-6-2).

For Baertschi, he now has 4 goals and 2 assists along with 12 shots on net, in his last 6 games played.

The Canucks came out in the first period with Sven Baertschi and Brandon Prust returning from injuries; Alex Edler over the flu, and the return of Eddie Lack, in a different uniform no less, to motivate them in the opening period.

The period was scoreless but not uneventful.

Bo Horvat had at least four good scoring chances and was easily the best forward on the ice for Vancouver.

Eddie Lack had a couple of goal posts and some tremendous stops, especially on Bo Horvat, Alex Burrows and Daniel Sedin.

Even though Jacob Markstrom only had two shots, his calming influence when Carolina had some prolonged offensive pressure in the Canucks zone, gave the Canucks the ability to move the puck out of their end unscathed.

Carolina was out shot by Vancouver 8 to 2; with the Hurricanes not getting their first shot on goal until between the 10th and 11th minutes of play.

Vancouver was 0 for 1 on the power play. Carolina was 9 for 16 on face-offs. Canucks Linden Vey was 3 for 5 in the face-off circle. Bo Horvat led Canucks in shots with 3; Daniel Sedin had 2 shots. Derek Dorsett led Vancouver in hits with 2. Carolina had 5 giveaways in the opening period. Jordan Staal was 5 for 8 for Carolina on face-offs.

Carolina carried over their late power play opportunity in the first period into the middle frame but the Canucks killed it easily enough. Canucks power play is a killer at 20for 23, 86.96 percent in their last 9 home games.

Play in the second period was initially to Vancouver’s liking, with the Canucks continuing to look for that elusive first goal of the game but with the amount of offensive possession in the Hurricanes end, Carolina was out shooting Vancouver 3-2 nearing the seven minute mark of the period.

Canucks received a power play opportunity when Noah Hanifin was penalized for holding Sven Baertschi at 6:37.

Unfortunately for the Canucks, on the power play Linden Vey gave up the puck on a stick check by Jordan Staal, and Carolina quickly left their zone, eventually scoring the opening goal of the game shorthanded.

John-Michael Iles, his 2nd goal of the season, on a wrist shot, assisted by Jordan Staal (9) at 8:02 to give Carolina a 1-0 lead.

To add insult to injury, the Canucks were unable to capitalize on their power play opportunity, going 0 for 2 in the game, making it 1 goal on 24 opportunities in their last 11 games.

After the Hurricanes goal, and a dejected Canucks team, Carolina turned up their game a notch, pestering Markstrom and the Canucks with shots, eventually catching up to the Canucks for shots in the game and surpassing them.

Canucks were getting the odd scoring chance but Eddie Lack continued to stymie his former Vancouver teammates, holding the Canucks off the score sheet, as Carolina continued to build on their momentum.

Then with the second period nearing an end, Sven Baertschi, with a leading pass from Adam Cracknell, went in on Eddie Lack all alone, burying the puck behind a surprised Lack, to tie the game up at 1-1.

Sven Baertschi, his 6th goal of the season, on a wrist shot, assisted by Adam Cracknell (5) at 17:39.

The Canucks good fortune, sort of, continued late in the period, as Vancouver received their third power play of the game when Jordan Staal was sent to the penalty box for hooking Ben Hutton at 18:41.

Then with six seconds left in the middle frame, Carolina’s Elias Lindholm, received a delay of game penalty for putting the puck over the glass, giving the Canucks a 5-on-3 for the first 41 seconds of the 3rd period.

The Hurricanes out shot the Canucks 13 to 7 in the period with both teams having 15 shots each after two. Carolina was 11 for20 on face-offs. Daneil Sedin had 4 shots after two periods; Bo Horvat, 3 shots; Alex Edler and Ben Hutton, 2 shots each. Linden Vey was 6 for 10 on face-offs after two; Henrik Sedin, 4 for 9; Bo Horvat, 5 for 14.

The Canucks entered the final period of the game with a two-man advantage, but were disappointing with both power plays, as they were unable to take advantage of either opportunity, and became 0 for 4 in the game on the power play, making it 3 for 41 in their last 15 games with the man advantage; 1 for 26 in their last 11 games.

With the killing of both power plays, the Hurricanes continued to dominate the game, continuing to out shoot Vancouver, and out chance them, in the first six minutes of the final frame.

And then demonstrating that persistence pays off, Bo Horvat gave the Canucks its first lead in the game, 2-1, as he grabbed the puck in the neutral zone, came down the right side of the boards, swung into the middle, rushed in on net, moved wide to his left and buried the pick past a sprawling Eddie Lack, with a highlight-reel goal.

Bo Horvat, his 4rth of the season, and second goal in two games, assisted by Matt Bartkowski (8) and Alex Biega (3), at 7:15.

But the Hurricanes still had air in their sails, as Jordan Staal, would even up the game 2-2 just over four and a half minutes later, with his 8th goal of the season, at the twelve minute mark, on a wrist shot, assisted by Noah Hanifin (7).

Jannick Hansen would leave the game with just under five minutes left in the game unable to play through an injury suffered earlier in the game.

The Canucks received an excellent opportunity with 2:43 left in the game with their 5th power play on a delay of game penalty to Carolina. Canucks were having repeated difficulty to gain control of the Hurricanes blue line and set up.

But once again, the persistence of Bo Horvat and the Canucks pays off, as Horvat scored a power play goal, his second goal of the game, and third goal in two games.

Horvat, his 5th goal of the season, on a wrist shot, assisted by Sven Baertschi (7) and Linden Vey (2), giving Vancouver the go ahead goal, 3-2.

Carolina would pull goalie Eddie Lack but the Vancouver Canucks would hang on for the 3-2 victory on home ice; their third victory on their seven game home stand, with two games left.

With the win, Vancouver takes over 3rd place in the Pacific division with 41 points, a point behind Arizona in 2nd place. They are 11 points behind Los Angeles; are a point in front of Calgary. They are two points in front of Anaheim, three a head of San Jose and 4 points in front of Edmonton.

Vancouver sits in 5th place in the Pacific division of the Western Conference. They continue to be 13 points behind Los Angeles; are 3 points behind the Coyotes; a point behind Calgary. They are also a single point in front of San Jose; and two points ahead of Edmonton.

Canucks are 3-4-1 against the Metropolitan division this season.

Alex Edler, who had the flu; Brandon Prust (lower body injury), and Sven Baertschi (upper body injury) will be in the line-up tonight for Vancouver.

G Ryan Miller (groin), F Brandon Sutter (sports hernia surgery), D Luca Sbisa (hand), and D Dan Hamhuis (facial fracture) are on the injured reserve list.

Jake Virtanen will not be in the line-up, and is a healthy scratch.

Carolina (16-17-6) comes into the game having played the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night at Rexall Place, losing 1-0 in overtime in the second and last game of their two game Western Canada road swing.

Cam Ward made 26 saves for the Hurricanes, who have lost back-to-back games in overtime.

The Carolina Hurricanes have killed off 21 consecutive penalties, their longest penalty-kill streak of the season. Last season, Carolina killed 36 consecutive penalties in 14 games from December 21, 2014 to January 19, 2015.

Hurricanes penalty kill average is 2lrst in the NHL at 79.3 percent, while their power play average is tied for 25th with Vancouver at 16.5 percent.

Lack is 4-0-2 in his last 6 games, with a 2.30 GAA and .923 Sv%, including wins against the Chicago and Washington

Eddie Lack will start for the Hurricanes and returns to Vancouver for the first time since being traded on June 26.

“If there’s one game I’ve been looking at on the calendar, it’s the Vancouver game,” Lack told the News & Observer.
