BLACKHAWKS AIM FOR 12TH STRAIGHT WIN IN NASHVILLE

The Blackhawks (31-13-4, 66 points) – who have equaled a franchise record with 11 consecutive victories to move into first place in the Central Division and Western Conference – look to extend that run when they visit the rival Predators (20-17-8, 48 points) at Bridgestone Arena as part of a national broadcast in both the U.S. and Canada (NBCSN, SN1).

This marks the fourth of five meetings between Chicago and Nashville in 2015-16; the Blackhawks have won two of the first three, including a 3-2 triumph last Tuesday at United Center for the eighth victory during its current winning streak.

STASTNY’S FOUR POINTS LEAD BLUES OVER PENGUINS

The Blues scored four unanswered goals – powered by 1-3—4 from Paul Stastny – to overcome a 2-1 deficit en route to their fourth victory in their past five games.

* At 27-15-7 (61 points), the Blues moved within two points of the idle Stars (29-12-5, 63 points) for second place in the Central Division. Dallas, however, holds three games in hand and owns the ROW tiebreaker (DAL: 27, STL: 24).
* Stastny recorded his sixth career four-point game and first since Dec. 16, 2013 vs. DAL (2-2—4 w/ COL). He has 5-18—23 this season (31 GP), including 2-8—10 in his last nine outings.
* Brian Elliott made 36 saves, including 16 in the second period, to earn his fourth win in his past five starts and improve to 9-5-4 overall this season. Elliott also upped his record to 6-2-1 in 10 career regular-season appearances vs. PIT.

AROUND THE RINKS

* Taylor Hall (2-1—3) and Teddy Purcell (1-2—3) both registered three points to snap the Oilers’ road losing streak at seven games (0-4-3) and halt the Panthers’ franchise-record home-winning streak at seven contests. Hall – who paces Edmonton in goals (18), assists (27) and points (45) this season – recorded his 12th career multi-goal game and second of the campaign (also Dec. 11 vs. NYR: 2-2—4). He has collected three or more points seven times this season.
* The Senators yielded three consecutive goals, but Zack Smith tied the game via a shorthanded penalty shot – with 5:31 remaining in regulation – and Mika Zibanejad potted the lone tally in the shootout to snap the Sharks’ winning streak at five games. Ottawa, who has won three of its last five outings, registered its ninth shorthanded goal of the season, one ahead of Montreal for the League lead.
* Semyon Varlamov made 36 saves, including 15 in the final period, to backstop the Avalanche to their third victory in as many meetings with the Jets this season as well as a 10-3-1 record versus divisional opponents in 2015-16. At 23-21-3 (49 points), Colorado leapfrogged idle Nashville (20-17-8, 48 points) for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, where six teams are within six points of its position.
* Jack Eichel posted 1-1—2 to power the Sabres to their fourth win in their last five games. Eichel, the second overall selection in the 2015 NHL Draft, shares second among rookies with 14 goals this season and ranks fourth with 15 assists and 29 points. Four of his six career multi-point performances have come since the NHL’s holiday break (5-8—13 in 12 GP).

MILESTONES & BENCHMARKS

* Avalanche forward Jarome Iginla (1-0—1) scored his 602nd career goal to move past Jari Kurri (601) and into sole possession of 18th place in NHL history. Iginla also recorded his 96th career game-winning goal; Elias says that is tied with Mats Sundin for ninth place in League history.
* Sharks forward Joe Thornton (0-1—1) registered his 927th career assist to move past Stan Mikita (926) and into sole possession of 17th place in NHL history. Thornton, who has 2-6—8 during a six-game point streak, has posted at least one point in 14 of his past 15 outings (5-14—19).
* Sabres forward David Legwand played in his 1,100th NHL game.
* Jets forward JC Lipon, a third-round selection (91st overall) in the 2013 NHL Draft, made his League debut.

LOOSE PUCKS

Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko scored his 25th goal of the season to move into a tie for fourth place in the NHL (w/ Tyler Seguin) . . . Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin reached the 20-goal milestone for the eighth time in his 10 NHL seasons. Trudeau holds 40 point preferred Prime Minister lead in Nanos tracking (ending January 15, 2016)

Nanos Weekly Leadership Tracking

  • Preferred Prime Minister –  Three months after the Federal Election, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau continues to enjoy a significant 40 point lead over the other federal party leaders.  More than one in two Canadians (53.5%) preferred Trudeau as PM, 16.8% were unsure as to their preference, 13.7% preferred Ambrose, 10.6% preferred Mulcair, and 4.5% preferred May.
  • Qualities of a Good Political Leader – Trudeau is two points below his 12 month high on the qualities of a good political measure.  Asked a series of independent questions for each party leader, 71.6% of Canadians thought Trudeau had the qualities of a good political leader while 56.9% thought similarly of Mulcair, 35.3% for May and 28.7% for Ambrose.

The team at Nanos in conjunction with Klipfolio have launched our new live political data portal where you run the numbers you want and can explore the trends and data you need.  This is part of our campaign, not only to provide the most reliable data to Canadians but to let them use it as they wish. We were the first to do nightly tracking and now we are the first research organization to post live public opinion data for Canadians.

We were the first to do nightly tracking and now we are the first research organization to post live public opinion data for Canadians. Here’s the link to check it out

To view the detailed tracking visit our website.

Methodology

The views of 1,000 respondents are compiled into a party power brand index for each party that goes from 0 to 100, where 0 means that the party has no brand power and 100 means it has maximum brand power. A score above 50 is an indication of brand power for the party and its leader at this time.

The important factors in this weekly tracking include the direction of the brand strength or weakness and also the brand power of one federal party relative to another.

The data is based on random telephone interviews with 1,000 Canadians, using a four week rolling average of 250 respondents each week, 18 years of age and over. The random sample of 1,000 respondents may be weighted by age and gender using the latest census information for Canada, and the sample is geographically stratified to be representative of Canada.

The interviews are compiled into a four week rolling average of 1,000 interviews where each week, the oldest group of 250 interviews is dropped and a new group of 250 interviews is added. The current wave of tracking is based on a four-week rolling average of 1,000 Canadians (250 per week) ending January 15th.

A random telephone survey of 1,000 Canadians is accurate 3.1 percentage points, plus or minus, 19 times out of 20.

All references or use of this data must cite “Nanos Party Power Index” as the source.

The Vancouver Canucks (19-17-10) play the fourth game of their 6-game road trip tonight against the New York Rangers ( 24-16-5) at Madison Square Garden.

Vancouver are going for their third win of the road trip, after losing in  Washington and defeating Carolina in overtime, and the Islanders in a shoot out.

The Rangers are looking for their 17 win at home in 24 games (16-5-2 in 23 home games). They have earned at least one point in 7 of their last 10 games (5-4-1), including 5 of their last 8 games (4-3-1) and 4 of their last 6 contests (3-2-1).

Henrik Sedin left the game in the first period of the last game, with an upper body injury, and would not return for the rest of the game. He will be evaluated but will miss the rest of the road trip, and may not return to the  lineup until after the All-Star game break.

“It’s probably a 10-day injury. I think he’ll be back after the All Star break,” coach Willie Desjardins said.

By Mike G. Morreale

NEWARK, N.J. — Vancouver Canucks captain Henrik Sedin might not return to the lineup until after the All-Star break because of an upper-body injury sustained Sunday against the New York Islanders.

Sedin did not practice with the team on Monday at AmeriHealth Pavilion in Newark, N.J.

“We’ll probably send him back [to Vancouver] so he won’t have any more games the rest of the road trip,” Canucks coach Willie Desjardins said. “Hopefully he’ll be ready after the All-Star break. I think it’s probably a 10-day injury or so.”

The Canucks play the fourth of a six-game road trip at the New York Rangers on Tuesday. They close out the trip at the Boston Bruins on Thursday and at the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, then return home to play the Nashville Predators on Jan. 26. The 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game is Jan. 31 in Nashville.

Sedin sustained the injury late in the first period of a 2-1 shootout win and did not return. Sedin was hit into the side boards by Islanders forward Mikhail Grabovski, who received a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct.

Daniel Sedin knows his twin brother won’t like having to sit at a time when the Canucks are coming off two straight victories.

“He’s not too happy; he wants to play every game and he’s upset,” Daniel said. “But he has to face the facts that if he’s not 100 percent, he needs to rest. It’ll be tough playing a few games without him.”

Henrik, who has nine goals and 37 points in 44 games this season, missed two games with a lower-body injury in December.

In his absence, Desjardins will likely have Jared McCann center Daniel Sedin and Radim Vrbata on the top line.

“[McCann] is a lot of faster than Henrik,” Daniel Sedin said with a grin. “They are different players. Jared plays with speed and tries to beat guys 1-on-1. We played together before Christmas and did a good job. We’re hoping for the best against a good team [Tuesday night].”

The slide in consumer confidence continued. The energy rich Prairie continue to be the most pessimistic.  Of note, Ontario has now hit a 12 month low for that province on the Bloomberg Nanos Canadian Confidence Index although still comparatively higher than the Prairies.

“A slide in consumer confidence in Ontario, coupled with the erosion of confidence in the energy rich Prairie province represents a one-two punch on the consumer confidence in Canada,” said Nanos Research Group Chairman Nik Nanos.

“Households are contending with higher out-of-pocket expenses as a weakening Canadian dollar raises the costs for consumer staples. This immediate impact on private consumption is a concern in light of surveys suggesting a decline in the demand for bank lending and a decline in business sentiment, whose impacts are generally felt in coming quarters”, said Robert Lawrie of Bloomberg Economics.

The BNCCI, a composite of a weekly measure of financial health and economic expectations, registered at 53.01 compared with last week’s 53.78. The twelve month high stands at 58.62.

The Bloomberg Nanos Pocketbook Index is based on survey responses to questions on personal finances and job security. This sub-indice was at 58.99 this week compared to 59.00 the previous week. The Bloomberg Nanos Expectations Index, based on surveys for the outlook for the economy and real estate prices, was at 47.02 this week (compared to 48.56 last week).

The average for the BNCCI since 2008 has been 56.67 with a low of 43.28 in December 2008 and a high of 62.92 in December 2009. The index has averaged 53.01 this year.

Methodology

The BNCCI is produced by the Nanos Research Corporation, headquartered in Canada,  which operates in Canada and the United States.  The data is based on random telephone interviews with 1,000 Canadian consumers (land- and cell-lines), using a four week rolling average of 250 respondents each week, 18 years of age and over. The random sample of 1,000 respondents may be weighted by age and gender using the latest census information for Canada and the sample is geographically stratified to be representative of Canada. The interviews are compiled into a four week rolling average of 1,000 interviews where each week, the oldest group of 250 interviews is dropped and a new group of 250 interviews is added. The views of 1,000 respondents are compiled into a diffusion index from 0 to 100. A score of 50 on the diffusion index indicates that positive and negative views are a wash while scores above 50 suggest net positive views, while those below 50 suggest net negative views in terms of the economic mood of Canadians.

A random telephone survey of 1,000 consumers in Canada is accurate 3.1 percentage points, plus or minus, 19 times out of 20.
