Teck Announces LNG Haul Truck Pilot Project

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA–(Marketwired – Dec. 9, 2015)

Teck Resources Limited (TSX:TCK.A) (TSX:TCK.B) (NYSE:TCK) is piloting the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel source in six haul trucks at its Fording River steelmaking coal operation in southeast B.C. – marking the first use of LNG as a haul truck fuel at a Canadian mine site.

The use of blended LNG/diesel fuelled haul trucks has the potential for significant environmental benefits and cost savings. LNG produces virtually no particulate or sulphur dioxide emissions and reduces Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by up to 20 percent in comparison to diesel alone. There is the potential to eliminate approximately 35,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually at Teck’s steelmaking coal operations and potentially reduce fuel costs by more than $20 million annually by adopting LNG and diesel hybrid fuel across the operations. FortisBC is transporting and supplying LNG to the mine site and is making a financial contribution towards the pilot.

The pilot is one of the steps Teck is taking to achieve its long-term target to reduce annual GHG emissions by 450,000 tonnes at its operations by 2030. To date, Teck has reduced annual emissions by 170,000 tonnes as the result of initiatives implemented since 2011.

“LNG is a fuel source that has the potential to lower costs, significantly reduce emissions and improve environmental performance at our operations,” said Don Lindsay, President & CEO, Teck. “We are committed to minimizing our own carbon footprint while at the same time continuing to provide the mining products that are essential to building a modern, low-carbon society.”

“Like British Columbia, Teck is a global leader in finding innovative ways to reduce GHG emissions while continuing to create opportunity,” said Premier Christy Clark. “It’s a concrete example of the difference clean-burning LNG can make in the fight against climate change.”

Teck, with support from FortisBC, has upgraded the Fording River Operations truck maintenance shop, provided engine conversion kits, installed fuelling facilities and implemented a comprehensive safety program in advance of the pilot.

“Teck is demonstrating leadership by adopting natural gas as a cleaner and more cost-effective fuel solution for their operations,” said Michael Mulcahy, President and CEO, FortisBC. “LNG, as a vehicle fuel source, provides both an economic and environmental benefit to industry in our province. Today’s announcement further builds on the diversity of the more than 400 natural gas-fuelled vehicles in British Columbia.”

The pilot is expected to run until mid-year 2016 and will provide more information about the potential of using LNG more broadly across Teck’s haul truck fleet, creating the opportunity for further fleet conversions to LNG in the future.

Liberal brand strongest in Nanos Party Power Index (ending December 4, 2015)

The Nanos Party Power Index

  • Nanos Party Power Index – The Index, which is comprised of a series of questions on vote preferences and impressions of the leaders has the Liberal brand still riding high in the post election period.  The Liberals scored 67.6 out of a possible 100 points on the Index, followed by the NDP who scored 48.4 points, the Conservatives 44.3 points, the Green Party at 34.2 points and the BQ at 25.9 points (Quebec only).
  • Accessible Voters – Asked a series of independent questions for each party, 64.6% of Canadians would consider voting Liberal, 42.1% would consider voting NDP, 41.1% would consider voting Conservative, and 30% would consider voting Green.

The team at Nanos in conjunction with Klipfolio have launched our new live political data portal where you run the numbers you want and can explore the trends and data you need.  This is part of our campaign, not only to provide the most reliable data to Canadians but to let them use it as they wish. We were the first to do nightly tracking and now we are the first research organization to post live public opinion data for Canadians. Here’s the link to check it out

To view the detailed tracking visit our website.

Methodology

The views of 1,000 respondents are compiled into a party power brand index for each party that goes from 0 to 100, where 0 means that the party has no brand power and 100 means it has maximum brand power. A score above 50 is an indication of brand power for the party and its leader at this time.

The important factors in this weekly tracking include the direction of the brand strength or weakness and also the brand power of one federal party relative to another.

The data is based on random telephone interviews with 1,000 Canadians, using a four week rolling average of 250 respondents each week, 18 years of age and over. The random sample of 1,000 respondents may be weighted by age and gender using the latest census information for Canada, and the sample is geographically stratified to be representative of Canada.

The interviews are compiled into a four week rolling average of 1,000 interviews where each week, the oldest group of 250 interviews is dropped and a new group of 250 interviews is added. The current wave of tracking is based on a four-week rolling average of 1,000 Canadians (250 per week) ending December 4th.

A random telephone survey of 1,000 Canadians is accurate 3.1 percentage points, plus or minus, 19 times out of 20.

All references or use of this data must cite “Nanos Party Power Index” as the source.

KANE LOOKS TO EXTEND RUN AS BLACKHAWKS OPEN HOME-AND-HOME

Forward Patrick Kane, who has points in a franchise-record 22 consecutive games (13-23—36), looks to continue that run when the Blackhawks welcome the Predators to United Center in the first half of a home-and-home series.

This marks the first of five meetings this season between Chicago and Nashville, who last faced off in the First Round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs – a six-game win by the Blackhawks that featured a pair of overtime contests, both of which extended into multiple periods.

Kane has 17-19—36 in 43 career regular-season appearances vs. NSH, but was limited to one assist in four head-to-head games last season. He also has recorded 6-8—14 in 12 career playoff matchups with the Predators, including 2-5—7 in last season’s six-game victory.

STREAKING TEAMS MEET ON NBCSN

Two teams riding lengthy point streaks meet when the Red Wings face the Capitals at Verizon Center. Detroit has picked up points in each of its past 10 games (7-0-3), its longest such run since March 11 – April 3, 2010 (10-0-2). Washington, meanwhile, has points in seven straight (6-0-1), but suffered a 2-1 overtime loss in its most recent outing on Saturday at WPG.

This marks the third and final meeting of the season between these Eastern Conference foes, who have split their past two matchups – each by one goal (1-0 W by DET on Nov. 10 and 2-1 OT W by WSH on Nov. 18).

Overall, six of the last eight games between these clubs have been decided by one goal dating to the start of the 2013-14 season, including four that went into overtime (WSH: 5-2-1, DET: 3-2-3).

LAMORIELLO FACES DEVILS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE JOINING MAPLE LEAFS

Longtime New Jersey general manager and executive Lou Lamoriello faces his old team for the first time when the Devils visit the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre. Lamoriello left New Jersey in July after spending 28 years with the franchise, highlighted by three Stanley Cups, five conference titles, nine division championships and 21 postseason berths.

The Devils compiled a 1,093-779-268 regular-season record and 136-116 playoff clip under the direction of Lamoriello, who finished his run as the longest-serving general manager of one team in NHL history.

“If you don’t have feelings, there’s something wrong with you,” Lamoriello told The Record. “There’s certainly a nostalgia involved that will never leave, should never leave . . . If you’ve had positive feelings and positive memories, why wouldn’t you [keep them]?”
