Researchers’ metallic glue may stick it to soldering and welding

Perhaps no startup was launched for a more intriguing reason than that of Northeastern’s Hanchen Huang. From the company website:

“MesoGlue was founded by Huang and two of his PhD students: They had a dream of a better way of sticking things together.”

Those “things” are everything from a computer’s central processing unit and a printed circuit board to the glass and metal filament in a light bulb.

The “way” of attaching them is, astonishingly, a glue made out of metal that sets at room temperature and requires very little pressure to seal.

“It’s like welding or soldering but without the heat,” says Huang, who is professor and chair in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

In a new paper, published in the January issue of Advanced Materials & Processes, Huang and colleagues, including Northeastern doctoral student Paul Elliott, describe their latest advances in the glue’s development. Our curiosity was piqued: Soldering with no heat? We asked Huang to elaborate.

On new developments in the composition of the metallic glue:

“Both ‘metal’ and ‘glue’ are familiar terms to most people, but their combination is new and made possible by unique properties of metallic nanorods–infinitesimally small rods with metal cores that we have coated with the element indium on one side and galium on the other.

These coated rods are arranged along a substrate like angled teeth on a comb: There is a bottom ‘comb’ and a top ‘comb.’ We then interlace the ‘teeth.’ When indium and galium touch each other, they form a liquid. The metal core of the rods acts to turn that liquid into a solid.

The resulting glue provides the strength and thermal/?electrical conductance of a metal bond. We recently received a new provisional patent for this development through Northeastern University.”

On the special properties of the metallic glue:

“The standard polymer glue does not function at high temperatures or high pressures, but the metallic glue does. The standard glue is not a great conductor of heat and/?or electricity, but the metallic glue is. Furthermore, the standard glue is not very resistant to air or gas leaks, but the metallic glue is.

“‘Hot’ processes like soldering and welding can result in metallic connections that are similar to those produced with the metallic glue, but they cost much more.

In addition, the high temperature necessary for these processes has deleterious effects on neighboring components, such as junctions in semiconductor devices. Such effects can speed up failure and not only increase cost but also prove dangerous to users.”

What are some applications of the technology?

“The metallic glue has multiple applications, many of them in the electronics industry. As a heat conductor, it may replace the thermal grease currently being used, and as an electrical conductor, it may replace today’s solders. Particular products include solar cells, pipe fittings, and components for computers and mobile devices.”

Gradual reduction of sugar in soft drinks without substitution as a strategy to reduce overweight, obesity, and type 2 diabetes: a modelling study

Summary

Background

Sugar-sweetened beverages are a major source of free sugar intake in both children and adults, and are an important contributor to obesity and obesity-related diseases, including type 2 diabetes. We proposed an incremental and stepwise reduction in free sugars added to sugar-sweetened beverages by 40% over 5 years without the use of artificial sweeteners and assessed the effect of the proposed strategy on energy intake and weight status.

Methods

In this modelling study, we used nationally representative data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey rolling programme (NDNS RP) from 2008–12 and British Soft Drinks Association annual reports to calculate sugar-sweetened beverage consumption (both with and without fruit juices) and its contribution to free sugar and energy intake in the UK population. We then estimated the predicted reduction in energy intake resulting from the proposed strategy at an individual level. We further predicted the reduction in steady-state bodyweight for each adult using a weight loss model. By scaling up the distribution of the predicted bodyweight in the NDNS RP to the UK adult population, we estimated reductions in the number of overweight and obese adults, and the number of adults with type 2 diabetes.

Findings

A 40% reduction in free sugars added to sugar-sweetened beverages over 5 years would lead to an average reduction in energy intake of 38·4 kcal per day (95% CI 36·3–40·7) by the end of the fifth year. This would lead to an average reduction in steady-state bodyweight of 1·20 kg (1·12–1·28) in adults, resulting in a reduction in the prevalence in adults of overweight by 1·0 percentage point (from 35·5% to 34·5%) and obesity by 2·1 percentage points (from 27·8% to 25·7%). This reduction would lead to a reduction of roughly 0·5 million adults from being overweight and 1 million adults from being obese, which in turn would prevent about 274 000–309 000 incident cases of obesity-related type 2 diabetes over the two decades after the predicted reduction in bodyweight is achieved. If fruit juices were excluded from the category of sugar-sweetened beverages (because of potential challenges for reformulation), the corresponding reductions in energy intake and steady-state bodyweight would be 31·0 kcal per day (95% CI 28·6–33·7) and 0·96 kg (0·88–1·04), respectively. These reductions would result in a 0·7 percentage point (0·3 million) reduction in overweight and a 1·7 percentage point (0·8 million) reduction in obesity, which would in turn prevent about 221 000–250 000 cases of type 2 diabetes over two decades after the predicted reduction in bodyweight is achieved. The predicted effect was greater in adolescents, young adults, and individuals from low-income families (who consume more sugar-sweetened beverages).

Interpretation

An incremental reduction in free sugars added to sugar-sweetened beverages without the use of artificial sweeteners is predicted to reduce the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. The proposed strategy should be implemented immediately, and could be used in combination with other approaches, such as taxation policies, to produce a more powerful effect.

NHL MORNING SKATE – JAN. 9, 2016

NHL MORNING SKATE – JAN. 9, 2016

Welcome to the “NHL Morning Skate,” a daily collection of the latest news and notes from around the League.

2015-16 SEASON REACHES THE HALFWAY POINT

The 2015-16 season reaches the halfway point (615 GP) following the conclusion of today’s pair of matinee games (WSH-NYR and NYI-PHI).

A look at some of the highlights thus far (compiled with the assistance of the Elias Sports Bureau):

COMPETITIVE BALANCE . . .

Twenty-three teams are within five points of a playoff berth:

* In the Atlantic Division, teams Nos. 2-6 are separated by five points.
* In the Metropolitan Division, teams Nos. 2-6 are separated by eight points.
* In the Central Division, teams Nos. 2-6 are separated by 11 points.
* In the Pacific Division, teams Nos. 2-7 are separated by seven points.

Just 22 points currently separate the 16 teams that occupy postseason spots:

* Last season, only 16 points separated the 16 teams that qualified for the playoffs. That was the narrowest gap in the 16-team postseason era. The last time there was a smaller gap (in any playoff format) was in 1964-65, when four of six total teams qualified for the postseason (13 points).

. . . LEADS TO PLAYOFF TURNOVER

Six teams that did not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season currently hold postseason spots (ARI, BOS, DAL, FLA, LAK and NJD):

* Last season, seven teams made the playoffs after not qualifying in 2013-14 (CGY, NSH, NYI, OTT, VAN, WPG and WSH). The seven-team turnover marked the largest year-to-year change in NHL history.
* Overall, there has been a playoff turnover of at least five clubs in eight of the past 10 seasons.

STANLEY CUP WINNERS AT THE HALFWAY POINT

A look at the eventual Stanley Cup champions’ position in the overall NHL standings through the day of games in which the League reached the midway point of the season (since 2008-09):

2014-15: Chicago Blackhawks, 6th
2013-14: Los Angeles Kings, 8th
2012-13: Chicago Blackhawks, 1st
2011-12: Los Angeles Kings, 11th
2010-11: Boston Bruins, 11th
2009-10: Chicago Blackhawks, 3rd
2008-09: Pittsburgh Penguins, 19th

3-ON-3 OVERTIME DECIDES MORE GAMES

Ninety-two of the 143 games that have required overtime this season have been decided in the extra period (64.3%).

Last season, under the 4-on-4 format, the percentage of overtime periods with goals was 44.4% (136 of 306).

COACH’S CHALLENGE TRACKER

There have been 114 coach’s challenges through the opening 607 games of the 2015-16 season. Of those challenges, 83 calls have been upheld, while 31 have been overturned.

Seventy-five of the coach’s challenges have been for goaltender interference (60 upheld/15 overturned), while 39 have been for offside (23 upheld/16 overturned).

CAPITALS SURGE TO TOP OF NHL STANDINGS

The League-leading Capitals (30-7-3, 63 points) are having their best start to a season – in terms of wins and points – in the franchise’s 41-year history. That includes an 18-2-2 record in their last 22 games dating to Nov. 21.

The Capitals reached the 30-win mark in their 40th game of the season. Only five other teams in NHL history have recorded 30 or more victories through their opening 40 games of a campaign: the 1929-30 Bruins, 1944-45 Canadiens, 2008-09 Sharks, 2012-13 Blackhawks and 2012-13 Penguins.

Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby leads the NHL with 26 wins in 2015-16, including a 18-0-2 record in his last 20 decisions – the longest point streak by a goaltender since 2010-11 (Roberto Luongo: 16-0-5 w/ VAN).

DYNAMIC SCORING DUO POWERS STARS

At 29-10-4 (62 points), the Stars also are off to their best start to a season – in terms of wins and points – in the franchise’s 49-year history. They are tied for the League lead 17 wins (17-4-0) at American Airlines Center – that equals their home win total from all of last season (17-16-8).

Stars teammates Jamie Benn (24-28—52) and Tyler Seguin (24-27—51) share the League lead with 24 goals apiece (with Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko). They also rank second and third, respectively, in points.

Playing in just his second NHL season, Stars defenseman John Klingberg ranks second among blueliners – and tied for ninth overall – with 6-32—38.

PANTHERS HIT MIDPOINT IN RECORD FORM

The Panthers (25-12-4, 54 points) enter the midway point of the season riding a franchise-record 11-game winning streak. They also have won a franchise-record seven straight games at home and have equaled another club record with five consecutive victories on the road.

Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo has won a career-high and franchise-record nine straight games (1.31 GAA, .954 SV%, 2 SO) – the longest such run by any goaltender this season. He also is three victories shy of tying Tony Esposito (423) for seventh place in NHL history.

JAGR PASSES DIONNE, NARROWS IN ON HULL

With his 732nd career goal on Dec. 20 vs. VAN, 43-year-old Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr moved past Marcel Dionne (731) and into sole possession of fourth place on the NHL’s all-time goals list. Jagr, who now sits at 736 career goals, trails Brett Hull (741) by five for a share of third place.

OVECHKIN NEARS 500 GOALS, SETS MARK FOR RUSSIANS

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin ranks fifth in the League with 22 goals, upping his career total to 497 (in 799 GP). He is seeking to become one of the fastest players in NHL history to reach the 500-goal club (in terms of games played):

Fastest to 500 Goals (In GP), NHL History
1. Wayne Gretzky: 575 GP
2. Mario Lemieux: 605 GP
3. Mike Bossy: 647 GP
4. Brett Hull: 693 GP
5. Phil Esposito: 803 GP

Ovechkin scored his 484th career goal on Nov. 19 vs. DAL (777 GP) to move past Sergei Fedorov (483 G in 1,248 GP) for the most goals by a Russian-born player in NHL history. Earlier this season, Ovechkin (497-433—930) also became the fourth Russian-born player to record 900 NHL points, following Fedorov (483-696—1,179), Alexander Mogilny (473-559—1,032) and Alex Kovalev (430-599—1,029).

POINT STREAK FOR THE AGES

Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane strung together a franchise-record 26-game point streak from Oct. 17 – Dec. 13, totaling 16-24—40 in that span. The streak was the longest such run by any U.S.-born player in NHL history as well as the longest point streak by any NHL player since 1992-93 (Mats Sundin: 21-25—46 in 30 GP). Kane, who has registered at least one point in 37 of his 43 appearances this season, continues to pace the League in assists (37) and points (60).

Vancouver Out To Take Season Series From Lightning In Key Game

CANUCKS BANTER     By Andrew Chernoff    January 9, 2016

Virtanen To Play, Miller Suits Up,

Hansen Out, Against Lightning

The Vancouver Canucks (16-16-9) play the 6th game on their 7-game home stand against the Tampa Bay Lightning  (20-17-4) tonight at Rogers Place.

The Canucks will be out to regain 3rd place in the Pacific division all for themselves with a victory tonight, and leap frog over Anaheim, who defeated the St. Louis Blues last night 4-3.

In their last game, Vancouver led by Bo Horvat’s offensive outburst, defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2, winning their third of five games on their seven game home stand.

Bo Horvat, had two goals, including the winner on the power play with 1:06 remaining in regulation; and Sven Baertschi, with a goal on his return to the lineup, scored for Vancouver, to improve the Canucks record to 5-2-1 in their last eight games.

Horvat, after scoring his first goal in 28 games against Arizona on Monday night, now has 3 goals in two straight games, two on the power play. For Baertschi, he now has 4 goals and 2 assists along with 12 shots on net, in his last 6 games played.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 26 of 28 shots in his 6th straight start, for a Sv% of .929.

Markstrom is now, 4-2-1 in his last 7 games, with a GAA of 2.12 and a Sv% of .929. In his last nine games, he is 4-4-1, with a GAA of 2.02 and Sv% of .932.

In their previous game, Vancouver’s comeback attempt against the Arizona Coyotes on Monday night fell short,  as the Canucks lost 3-2 in the fourth game of four consecutive games at home against Pacific division opponents.

Bo Horvat and Daniel Sedin scored for Vancouver. For Horvat, it was his first goal in 28 games; for Sedin, it was his 17th goal of the season, to lead all Canucks. Jacob Markstrom stopped 26 of 29 shots in his 5th straight start, for a Sv% of .897.

Vancouver has a 4-4-3 record against the Atlantic division opponents and 8-8-4 record against the Eastern Conference overall.

Jake Virtanen, who was loaned to Canada for the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, will return to the lineup. The No. 6 pick at the 2014 NHL Draft has one goal and three assists in 19 games with Vancouver but has not played in the League since Nov. 30.

Jacob Markstrom, will make his 7th consecutive start in net, with Ryan Miller backing him up.

Emerson Etem, the newest Canuck, acquired in a trade from the New York Rangers yesterday, will not play tonight.

Current injuries for the Canucks include: F Brandon Sutter (sports hernia surgery), D Luca Sbisa (hand), and D Dan Hamhuis (facial fracture) and F Jannick Hansen (upper body) are on the injured reserve list.

The Canucks are 1-4-0 against the Lightning in their last five games played and 3-6-1 in their last 10 meetings, dating back to the 2007-2008 season.

The Canucks are in 4rth place, tied for 3rd with Anaheim, in the Pacific division of the Western Conference with 41 points, 3 points behind second place Arizona and 13 points behind division leaders Los Angeles. Vancouver is ahead of Calgary by a single point. Canucks are three points in front of San Jose, with Edmonton 4 points back.

San Jose has 3 games in hand on Vancouver.

The Lightning come into the game having played the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night at Rexall Place, staging a winning comeback by scoring three consecutive goals in the 3rd period and defeating the home team 3-2 in their second game of their 3 game Western Canada road swing. The Bolts had dropped four in a row in Edmonton and  were 0-3-1 over that stretch; Tampa Bay is 5-10-1 all-time in Edmonton now.

Victor Hedman had a goal and two assists in the third period. Nikita Kucherov scored the tying goal for Tampa Bay;  and Steven Stamkos, with his 18th goal of the season, scored the game-winner with 4:09 remaining. Goaltender Ben Bishop made 24 saves. The Lightning were 0 for 3 on the power play and 2 for 3 on the penalty kill.

Tampa Bay previously lost to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, 3-1 at Scotiabank Saddledome. The Lightning lost in regulation in the opening game of a multi-game road trip for the first time this season, dropping to 4-1-1 in such situations. Steven Stamkos netted his team-leading 17th goal of the season. Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop made his first start of 2016 and stopped 21-of-23 shots but was saddled with the loss. Tampa Bay didn’t have a power play in the loss to Calgary, the first time this season it’s gone a game without a power play.

Tampa Bay allowed its first power-play goal in its last 8 games, against Edmonton last night, bringing to an end their consecutive game streaks to an end without one at 7 games. The Lightning have now successfully killed 20 of 21 opponent power plays in their last 8 games. The Bolts penalty kill ranks tied for 21rst in the NHL at 79.3% overall.

The Bolts have scored 9 power-play goals on 33 power-play opportunities (27%) over their last 8 games.

Tampa Bay is 6-3-0 against Pacific Division opponents and have a 8-7-2 record against the Western Conference overall.

The Lightning sit in 5th spot in the Atlantic division of the Eastern Conference, with 44 points, 5 points out of 2nd place and a playoff position.
