I’m not sure we should label students as “Special Needs”! Let me explain. All students should be treated “equal” when we label them “for life” — then, we actually perpetuate their need(s). I taught in a maximum security, juvenile justice setting and my students definitely had special needs! How did I respond (as a vocational instructor)? I treated them just like I would a student at the college level–that is to say, I had ‘high” expectations for their success> I think that in many cases — once the “SN” label is applied to students “our” expectations for their success in the world decreases. Thus, they are doomed to fail as productive members in our society.
Then, there is the issue of funding for special needs students–with budgets tightening–most administrators cannot afford the loss of funding for “their” special needs students. (and that is a problem) — There are no incentives to remove students from special needs programs into mainstream classes within the “general” student body (and society). Actually the incentive is to declare “more” individuals as having special needs — so, more funding can be acquired! Hell, we all have special needs! Don’t we? Has anyone prevented us from becoming highly educated because “we” simply needed remediation? No!
Let’s re-consider the term “special needs” and focus on educational reform. My post on adapting your curriculum and instruction to address “special needs” is available at:

I think all educators should be capable of adapting their instruction to address students with special needs. We don’t “usually” need a special teacher to teach students with special needs! Please post my comment: Because, I put much thought into this essay. I encourage you to review my works on the blog (above) and/or sample purchase my books which are available via: http://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/kennethfetterman
Andrew, Thank you for approving my comment. I have decided to post it as an entry on my blog in case you would like to access it there. (Links above) — Best wishes, KEN
